Top 10 Dev Articles Over the Past Week (September 10 — September 17)

Hey, everyone, and welcome to our new weekly digest, where we collected the most thought-provoking articles from the software development galaxy. As always, before we come to the actual list of articles, we’ll tell you about one of the interesting articles.

This time, our hero will be an old woman, who became a millionaire by spilling hot Coffee on her knees.

One day, this 79-year old granny was in the passenger seat of her grandson’s car when she ordered coffee at a McDonald’s drive-through window. Having received her coffee, she asked her grandson to stop the car so she could add cream and sugar to her coffee. She put the cup of coffee between her legs trying to remove the lid but… Unfortunately, she spilled the entire liquid contents on her lap.

As a result, she’s diagnosed with third-degree burns on approximately 6 percent of her body.

This brave woman decided to settle with the fast-food giant at $20,000. However, they refused settlement, so this led to additional lawsuits. During the investigation, it turned out that more than 700 people made claims against McDonald’s over being burned by their coffee.

After a jury trial, Liebeck was awarded $200,000 in compensatory damages as well as $2.7 million in punitive damages. However, the amount of compensatory award was reduced to $160,000 as a jury found poor Liebeck 20 percent at fault in the spill.

A post-verdict investigation showed that the temperature of coffee at the local McDonald’s, where had been bought that unfortunate coffee, had been dropped to 158 degrees Fahrenheit.
