What is Cache Data and Why You Need to Clear Your Mac Cache

Tech maintenance is an integral part of keeping your devices running smoothly and fast. However, it can be quite hard to understand without the know-how.

In any case, Mac Cache is a great place to start, but before you start clearing it, it’s probably a good idea to understand its purpose. In premise, cached data is the information that is stored for simple reloading of elements, configurations, data that make your web experience seamless.

In this article, we will cover what is cached data, how it works, and how to clear it in a variety of ways on your device.

If that sounds interesting to you, keep reading to learn more.

What Is Cached Data?

As prior mentioned, cached data is stored information on your computer, which occupies a reserved partition of Memory on a storage drive. However, there is also a processor cache that is stored on your CPU.

The most common types of caches are disk and memory. Memory cache uses a part of your static RAM, and disk cache makes use of the primary memory.

Cache memory makes use of temporary files, allowing your device to quickly retrieve them for quick access/loading instead of downloading them all over again. This saves bandwidth, and caring cache deletes your web browsing history.

A cache server captures entire pages that have been previously accessed, hence loading a website the second time will be quicker than the first. Accessing the server will load the cached version, reducing bandwidth consumption and traffic congestion.

How Does Mac Cache Work?

For the data to be re-accessed, there must be lots of memory. From a technical standpoint, the cache is quite high on the hierarchy of memory. Therefore, it’s not really a problem.

For instance, the lesser partitions of the computer processor in the CPU register contain several levels of cache memory.

L1 is the primary level that is built into the microprocessor.

L2 is the second level which feeds its memory into L1. L3 does the same. Both of these are slower than L1 by a little.

Cache memory has low latency, therefore it is easily accessed. This can be tested by visiting a website or opening an app you have never opened before. After this, revisit the website, and compare the loading speeds.

The downside to lower latency is the fact that lots of memory cannot be occupied. That’s why smaller-sized files such as images and text are stored in the memory cache.

How to Clear User Cache On Mac?

User cache can take up a significant amount of space on your computer because it is a more long-term solution than browser cache. A single folder can occupy GBs of space, and that’s just one folder. This means that clearing user cache on Mac can significantly speed up and free up your computer.

To clean the user cache, open the Finder, and choose the Go To Folder option.

Type ~/Library/Caches in the search bar, and proceed to the folder. You can choose to store these files on another folder to deactivate the memory, in case something happens, but it’s quite unlikely.

Go into the folders in Caches, and clean everything out. Do not remove the folder themselves, just the contents. Now do the same for /Library/Caches instead of ~/Library/Caches.

Ensure that every doing so, you have also cleared the Trash bin. In order to do this, click on the Trash icon with the right-click, and then choose Empty Trash. Restart your computer after in order for the memory to be re-written into clean sectors.

That’s that, you’ve cleared Mac Cache.

How to Clear Cache On Firefox?

Go to Firefox, click on the menu in the top-right corner, go to the History option, and click on Clear Recent History.
