Honda’s New Electric Sports Car Concept Could Be the Next NSX

Well, this sure seems interesting.

Honda announced its lineup for the Japan Mobility Show, the new moniker for what was once known as the Tokyo Motor Show. It opens Oct. 25th to the media and Oct. 28th to the public, and runs through Nov. 5th.

Scattered among announcements for all sorts of electrified scooter, bike and hatchback concept vehicles, Honda announced it will be unveiling the Honda Specialty Sports Concept, which the company describes as a fun-to-drive Electric Sports Car that will “transcend the constraints of time, even in the era of electrification for carbon neutrality and the popularization of automated driving technology.”

Unlike the other vehicles announced for its Honda Dream Loop display, the electric sports car isn’t shown.

Yet by mid-decade, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the company is planning to offer a pair of all-electric sports cars. While one of them would be a “specialty” vehicle, the other is planned as a “flagship model.” The only other hint given at the time was a teaser shot of a sports car with an NSX-type silhouette.

The second-generation Acura NSX went out of production in 2022, with the final 350 units of the gas-electric hybrid sports car dressed in high-performance NSX Type S trim.

By the time a possible electric NSX debuts, Honda should be producing its new software-defined e:Architecture EV platform, slated to appear in 2026. Until then, look for Honda to partner with GM, using its Ultium platform to produce such EVs as the 2024 Acura ZDXand 2024 Honda Prologue, while its performance flag will be flown by the gasoline-powered Acura Integra Type S and the Honda Civic Type R.
