Telecom Acronyms Explained

In a world where language seems to be shorted at every possible opportunity – you must remember the text speak of the 00’s, awful wasn’t it!

Telecoms acronyms can sound a lot more confusing than what they are in reality, naturally you will come across some these, be it through your Telephone provider or when searching for additional information online.

CLI – Calling Line Identification
This is the number this is displayed when you are calling out and the number that is displayed on the called party’s telephone equipment.

DTMF – Dual Tone Multi Frequency
The technology behind automated switchboards (Press 1 for Accounts…). It works by generating two tones of different frequencies which instruct system to direct a call.

IVR – Interactive Voice Response
This is the system which can detect voice and touch tone signals thorough DTMF to select the call direction, for example. For sales, press 1 .

MOH – Music On Hold
The music that is played whilst the caller is waiting for the call to connect to the end user.

PBX – Private Branch Exchange
It is a telephone system within a business. It provides a range of additional call functionality such as allowing users to call each other internally and make efficient use of external Phone Lines.

SIP – Session Initiation Protocol
Enables calls to be routed via the internet rather than a telephone network.

SMS – Short Message Service
Otherwise know as a text message, we offer a Callback SMS service. A short message that can be texted to your callers if you miss their call.

Simply means having a phone service over the internet. VoIP offers increased functionality compared to traditional phone lines which are why businesses are moving to VoIP
