Hyundai Motor develops ‘digital key’ to unlock car via smartphone

Hyundai Motor Group unveiled smartphone-based digital key

Hyundai Motor group announced the development of a ‘Digital Key’ on Tuesday. This smartphone-based Digital Key allows users to unlock via their smartphone – even start their Hyundai vehicle.

“The Digital Key will benefit a very wide range of future Hyundai customers, as well as enabling innovative new schemes for vehicle sharing,” said Ho Yoo, Group Leader of Hyundai Motor Group’s Electronics Development Group. “We are studying other ways to harness this type of connected-car technology to greatly enhance the driving and ownership experience.”

How to use the smartphone-based digital key?

The newly introduced digital key by Hyundai Motor is just a replacement of your traditional keys. If you own a Hyundai car, you just need to download an App to use it. Further, Up to four authorized people can use the new digital key.

Near Field Communication (NFC) technology then detects the presence of an smartphone (authorized) in close proximity to the car’s door. All this is possible due to NFC antenna which is placed in handles for entry identification. For starting the engine, one is located within the wireless charging pad.

The user can start the engine by placing the smartphone on the wireless charging pad in the center console after unlocking the car. Alongside, the user has to press an engine Start/Stop button on the dashboard. The vehicle settings automatically change according to the four authorized users. There is no need to do it manually every time they get in the car. By vehicle setting Hyundai Motor here refers to the position of mirrors, seats and the steering wheel, as well as controls for the audio, video, and navigation (AVN) systems and head-up display.

Are these digital keys feasible enough to hand over to others?

Handing over a digital key is not feasible for cases such as using a valet service or visiting a repair shop. To solve this problem user will be provided with a conventional smart key and card type key.

The vehicle owner can preset the duration of vehicle use. They can even limit the use to only certain features when renting their vehicle. Hyundai Motor has further plan to program the Digital Key to support hassle free vehicle rental where the owner and the driver won’t have to meet but can transfer the Digital Key via the cell phone application. But this is not going to happen until the car sharing becomes more widespread.
