Folding and Flipping Phones of the Past

Everyone is psyched about the impending release of the Galaxy Fold (April 26) and the rumors circulating about other big players releasing foldable phones, but we were excited about foldable phones years before it was cool! Here’s a look at our favorite foldable and Flipping phones from the past.

Razor

Every cool kid in school had the Motorola Razor. With a tiny notification screen on the front and that oh so satisfying flip open, the Razor was truly an iconic device. Every icon deserves an epic comeback, and this year, it’s the Razor’s turn. Motorola announced a new and modern model of the Razor will be released in 2019. It’s still a foldable phone and when extended it will look similar to most modern smartphones, but when it is folded down it looks similar to the razor phone we remember. The renderings look enchanting, but with no front facing camera and a high price point ($1500), it’s tough to say whether it will compare to its foldable counterparts.

Sidekick

It’s easy to forget that many of the phones that folded or flipped in the past, did so to hide a keyboard. The perfect example of this would be the T-Mobile Sidekick. Instead of flipping or sliding up, the Sidekick swiveled 180 degrees upward to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. Released in 2002, this phone was everywhere. Celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton were never photographed without one and the sidekick made its way into reality shows, awards shows, commercials, and subsequently our hearts. The phone fizzled out with the introduction of touch screens, but it remains an important touchstone in the history of smartphones.

Juke

The last flipping phone that we think is worth mentioning was the Samsung Juke. Folded down, this teeny-tiny phone measures in at 4 inches tall and 2 inches wide. When it’s flipped up, a number keypad is revealed along with a few menu keys. In order to text or type, you had to utilize the T9 method. A method of texting that would make any kid these days lose their minds. Released in 2007, it was branded to be both a phone and a music player. Two years later, it would be rendered completely obsolete by the iPhone 3GS.
