It's actually longer than the Dell Precision 7730 lasted (4:14) but still far from the average workstation (6:47). The ThinkPad P71 went out at 5:57, but it was on an older version of our test, with a screen brightness of 100 nits.
Webcam
Professionals who make video calls frequently will want to replace the ZBook 17 G5's 720p webcam with an external camera, such as the Logitech C920. The selfies I took with the front camera of the ZBook 17 were gritty and fuzzy, though the lens captured a good amount of light in our dark office.
The lack of sharpness is a shame because the camera has captured fairly accurate colors. I could see clear streaks in my dirty blonde beard and the whitewashed cupboards behind me had the right shade of green. Unfortunately, my beard looked more like a drop than an object made up of individual locks of hair.
Heat
The ZBook 17 G5 is well managed by dispersing the heat on its huge footprint, even with a heavy workload. When we watched a 15-minute HD video in full screen, the touchpad of the laptop was heating at only 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The hottest part of the laptop, near the hinge, has exceeded 95 degrees, which corresponds to our comfort threshold. The center of the keyboard (88 degrees) and the bottom of the laptop (91.5 degrees) were also well below this mark.
Software and Warranty
The ZBook 17 was largely spared by preinstalled software, with the exception of several internal diagnostics and support applications.
These include HP DreamColor Assistant, a display calibration software and HP Sure Click, an application that provides a hardware security to web browsers. HP JumpStart is another useful addition that guides you through the process of setting up your new laptop.
Other programs are failures. The Power Manager application has asked me to adjust the BIOS settings before it opens. And for some reason, WorkWise is preinstalled on the ZBook despite HP's plans to terminate this application in January 2019.
The typical bloatware used by Microsoft in its operating system is virtually absent of Windows 10 Pro, although there are still some applications, like LinkedIn and Microsoft Solitaire Collection.

Configurations
The ZBook 17 G5 is an expensive machine, even for a workstation. The laptop starts at $ 1,899 for an FHD display, a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and an Nvidia Quadro P1000 graphics processor.
Our evaluation unit at $ 5,313 displays a 4K resolution and features an Intel Xeon E-2176M processor, 32GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a Quadro P4200 graphics processor . Upgrading the processor to an Xeon E-2186M costs an additional $ 434, and a storage capacity greater than 1TB will bring you $ 405 more.
For fun, I configured a high-end ZBook 17 with the most sophisticated components that HP offers to evaluate its cost. The 4K touchscreen laptop was powered by a Xeon E-2186M processor and included 64GB of RAM, three 2TB M.2 SSDs, a 1TB SATA drive (or 7TB total!) Bottom Line
The ZBook 17 G5 is an excellent machine for the most demanding users. If you can go beyond the size of this laptop, you'll enjoy its stunning 4K display, super-fast performance and reassuring cooling.
But it presents some notable gaps. Although the workstations are not known for their longevity, the battery life of the ZBook is particularly low. The most serious fault of the ZBook is perhaps its shallow keyboard, which is far from being as comfortable as those of the ThinkPad P71 or the Precision 7730.
These competitors fought well against the ZBook 17. The ThinkPad P71 is equipped with a first-rate keyboard, an equally impressive 4K panel and a good battery life. The performance of this machine, however, can not follow those of the ZBook. The Precision 7730 is another fantastic workstation, featuring a breathtaking 4K panel, fast performance and a premium design, but it also has poor endurance and foolproof heating .
In the end, each of these laptops is a good choice for people who want the best computer equipment – and who have several thousand dollars to spend.
