Apple Watch switching over to solid-state buttons at some point

Almost every smartwatch on the market has physical buttons, but Apple would like to try something different in the near future.

Apple Watch will likely receive touch sensitive semiconductor buttons, according to Fast Company . So far Apple smartwatchers were supplied with two buttons. The crown is used both for scrolling and for returning home, while the other button makes selection.

It would be similar to the Home button on the iPhone, ie 8 and the iPhone 7. Apple uses haptic feedback for a similar push of a button. MacBook and MacBook Pro gained similar functionality in relation to their Force Touch trackpads in 2015.

After switching to the semiconductor buttons, the Apple watch will become more waterproof. The product can also get a larger battery, because the touch-sensitive input requires less space.

Apple will probably announce the Apple Watch Series 4 this fall with the new iPhone models, but the semiconductor buttons may be paused until 2019. Technology may not be ready for this year. In this case the Apple Watch Series 4 will be a gradual update. However, the smartwatch for next year will be the one that will keep an eye on.
