Valve Tells Game Publishers It Will “Stop Policing Content on Steam”

Valve, the owner behind one of the world's largest video game platform, has long been dealing with controversies about what kind of games it allows Steam to download for gamers.

Recently, the company tried to clean up the air in response to what kind of content it allows on its platform. In a blog post Valve has decided his intentions to stop checking content on Steam as long as it is not "illegal or straight-up trolling".

This means that the platform does not take up video games, unless they do not comply with the law, including video games for adults and offensive. Instead, the company says it wants to improve its system and give it more control over its users to filter out the kind of content they do not want to see.

A senior Valve executive, Erik Johnson said in a blog post,

We have decided that the right approach is to let everything go to the Steam Store, except for things that we decide to be illegal, or just trolling. By following this approach, we can focus less on trying to police what Steam should be, and more on building those tools to give people control over what kind of content they see.

Illegal or Straight Up Trolling?

This was the response to a controversy related to a recently released visual novel, which was eventually removed because of its content. Such visual novels are usually censored for underage or specific target groups, rather than being completely removed.

Valve should not be the one who decides this. If you are a player, we should not choose for you which content you can or can not buy. If you are a developer, we should not choose what content you can create. Those choices should be for you. Our role should be to provide systems and tools to support your efforts to make these choices for yourself, and to help you do it in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

However, the game platform still retains control over what it will allow on Steam. The company is not clear what kind of games or content falls under the category of illegal or just trolling.

It should be noted that Steam is used internationally and must comply with laws with other countries that prohibit adult or violent content. In view of this, Valve must re-evaluate its legal policy.

The company still has to roll out its new content filtering system. Games that are stuck in the approval phase will have to wait a little longer before the new & # 39; non-police & # 39; rules of Steam go live.
