Social media is an ideal place to express your opinion. However, if these opinions are offensive or outright common, there may be consequences.
This is the exact case of a Pakistani student of NUST who had placed a pair that was really disconcerting with regard to the kidnapping of activist Gul Bukhari. Although he removed the tweet, it was picked up by Nighat Dad.
This is what she shared.
Mashallah he is studying at NUST today. And that's what he said, just one day before his graduation. Dangerous things that our institutions produce. pic.twitter.com/vZue2pYBfw
– Nighat Dad (@nighatdad) June 6, 2018
As a result, the Twitterverse was (rightly) visibly upset, with people who said all kinds of stuff. Some expressed their aversion:
Disgusting. Name and shame @mursaleenpti @PTIofficial https://t.co/xML7bQ3V2b
– Nosheen Abbas (@Goshno) June 6, 2018
You can delete your tweet but can not hide your dirty mind. Shame on you pic.twitter.com/O7ZMFiFtZV
– i AM (@ RANA168) June 6, 2018
Others had stronger views:
If your father would have hit you hard and your mother would stop feeding you
you will become a much better person– Rehman Khilji (@RehmanKhilji) 8 June 2018
And some warned the NUST student about the consequences:
Dear @mursaleenpti,
We will meet one day because your resume / application letter will appear on online job portals.
Your future employer (s) should know more about your sadistic rape tendencies towards women. And yes, fori embassies and consulates should also be. # GulBukhari @Official_NUST pic.twitter. com / fZfxCtRrXc
– Fishel Benkhald (@Jew_Pakistani) June 6, 2018
This male face should be retweeted until it is known. A woman is kidnapped and he has to say this. Shame about his education. His future employers should know his mentality.
– Josephina Khattab (@ JosephinaKhatt1) 8 June 2018
People made sure that he knew how common an act this was, not only with regard to him, but also NUST:
your tweet who calls for a sexual assault on generous Bukhari is a shame for the institution where you and I graduated. You should be ashamed that NUST is held accountable for your total lack of ethics. You have now also removed the tweet.
– Usman Hassan (@ UHassan59) June 6, 2018
Such a shame that our institutions produce such dirty characters.
– Wajid (@WajidQAU) 8 June 2018
@OfficialNUST surprised to see how shits graduate from your university. @mursaleenpti @ImranKhanPTI @fawadchaudhry @ ShireenMazari1 @AndleebAbbas @FIA_Pakistan @gulbukhari @Official_NUST pic.twitter.com/qjx3Q8tNzk
– Mohsin Abbasi (@MM_Abbaci) 6 June 2018
Some Twitteratis thought the tweets were in fact Photoshopped:
So apparently @nighatdad posted a fake screenshot @mursaleenpti & @sherryrehman retweeted and has NUST asked to retire the student
What is the difference between you and the fatwa factories that use religion cards to play with the lives of innocents? I hope FIA investigates this! pic.twitter.com/Vm548EkI5l
– Makhdoom Shahab (@makhdoomshahab) June 6, 2018
New jewel from Photoshop thaffuz movement # GulBukhari drama began after 22: 00 o'clock on 5 June. How could @mursaleenpti tweet about her at 3 pm? And no, it is not the time zone difference, unless NUST has moved to another continent pic.twitter.com/cJrZzKF7F5
– Asfandyar Bhittani (@BhittaniKhannnn) 6 June 2018
This man even shared some personal insight:
Mursaleen got to know me and personally assured that the tweets are fake and he is the target. However, I apologize to @nighatdad and @sherryrehman
– Makhdoom Shahab (@makhdoomshahab) 8 June 2018
And then there was this:
He is a victim because he is fascinated by the feminist mafia through fake screenshots and now he has to admit that he has to save himself!
– Ahsan Zafeer Khan (@AhsanZafeer) 8 June 2018
However, things became more serious as soon as Sherry Rehman became involved:
Regardless of who he addresses, I assume that @OfficialNUST will revoke degree and @PTI (which is part of his Twitter identity) will oppose such an open call to bloodthirst and torture. There must be no impunity, or social or professional tolerance for such horrible hate speech https://t.co/O4bwiXbpDp
– SenatorSherryRehman (@sherryrehman) June 6, 2018
NUST, too, remarked this fortunately:
(Some thought this was the fake grip since Sherry Rehman tagged another account in her tweet, but after confirmation with NUST students, this is in fact legitimate.)
NUST management has taken note of the remarks of her student, Muhammad Mursaleen, and appropriate action is being taken in this respect.
– NUST Official (@Official_NUST) 8 June 2018
After this complete fiasco the student finally apologized:
My apologies for my remarks to Gul Bukhari, and for the fear caused. My expression and choice of words were unacceptable.
I will be advised by NUST Center for Counseling & Career Advisory and undergo a mandatory community service to develop respect for women.– Mursaleen (@mursaleenpti) 8 June 2018
After which some weighed on why he did this:
no child, we are sorry people just found you tweets, shared them and you went viral.
– Hisham Adamjee (@hishamadamjee) 8 June 2018
He removed it because he was held responsible for it. That is not to his honor. That is the merit of all the women who have called him.
– Mariam Mohammed (@_marmariam) June 8, 2018
You should personally apologize to her.
Agar social media ap khilaf tweets after krti, ap tu apology b na mangty. Is still appreciated– jasmin (@ NBabar11) 8 June 2018
And they dropped in a more advanced suggestion:
Begin by apologizing apologies to @nighatdad, who accused you of lying and slander (ironically, doing the same acts yourself), and personally apologize to Gul Bukhari for your words.
Even if you are sincere sorry, you begin to hold your peers accountable for their words.
– Kamil Hamid (@aghakamilhamid) 8 June 2018
Some people praised him because he apologized:
Well , it takes courage to accept your mistakes. I am happy for you and may your future be healthy.
– لول – LoL (@PseudoExtremist) June 8, 2018
if this is real and comes from your heat, my respect!
– Sarfraz Baig (@ BaigSarfraz09) 8 June 2018
Takes real courage Mursaleen !! Shabaash !!
I hope this will make you a better person and you will learn how to respond to someone you do not agree with.Bs apnlication apne batchmate Makhdoom se bhi, bechare ka career as journalist shuroo nahi hua tha aur tumne kahan phasa dia
– Basit Khan (@ basit_arbi93) 8 June 2018
Good that you understood your mistake, but after a notification from your university & threatens to be expelled.
– Farhad Aslam (@farhad_aslam) June 8, 2018
Finally, Gul Bukhari also weighed on the issue, showing incredible favor and balance .
Thank you for your apology. You are probably young enough to be my son. I pray to God that you never want sexual torture from a woman, let alone on a woman who is old enough to be your mother. My sincere prayers for your future. God bless. https://t.co/Svy6jbENaO

This twitter fault, regardless of whose side you have But it has been shown how influential social media can be to bring down bullies and trolls. Important props for Nighat Dad and Sherry Rehman for expressing their thoughts. And it is HUGE that Gul Bukhari has forgiven the student.
