Here’s Why You Need To Stop Making Disabled People Your Source Of Inspiration

Tanzila Khan has been a motivating speaker for a long time and recently she decided that she would give up the motivational speech

For several years, the girl on the wheelchair has inspired many people to put an end to this inspiration. Here is her story

I had a fantastic trip on two wheels and still. Many of you know me as a public speaker, others know me as a motivating speaker. I have always enjoyed every moment of my work, but I asked myself: am I really? Do I want me to be this? Is that what I was striving for?

I stop talking to Motivational after giving it a thought for a year and the following are my reasons:

  1. It was never a choice I made. It is strange that how a boy is compared to an engineer, a girl with a doctor, a disabled individual, is accompanied by a motivational speaker.
  2. People ask me about my story and I never disappoint. My story is not at all tragic. It was a lifestyle since the first day and I got around there. I'm expected to sound like a tragedy, but how do you talk about late pizza delivery while sobbing?
  3. It is as if only because I have a disability do I automatically qualify to be inspiring? I am always expected to be the nice, sweet girl on the wheelchair. This sounds great, but has caused me so much dent in my real life, where I often went unheard of because my truth was dark and uninspiring.
  4. Nobody really sees anyone who exceeds their disability to speak on stage. I have written books, organized many events, challenged policies, two diplomas, and enjoy so many ideas. It is all wasted when all people know me as a motivational speaker and ignore everything I have done and want to do.
  5. I am a woman who believes in having an inheritance. The real awakening happened when I heard a young girl with a disability from Gujranwala say: & # 39; I want to be a motivational speaker & # 39; . I wondered why she limits herself? Today she has access to education and there are inclusions in many areas, so why not occupy it? Why aim so low and strive for something that is a by-product of any medium?
  6. We people with disabilities are used as platforms to give a softer appearance. The inscription of the buzzword is only a word, because exactly the same event for which you have been invited may not have a ramp.
  7. This is not an industry in Pakistan. Which means that there is no mechanism of payment, no competition, no promotion, no mentors, no laws, no comparison, no growth. It is as if you are standing still in water. As you dive deeper, it becomes darker.
  8. If Motivational Speaking is your only source of income. You need another one. It is a no pay game.
  9. Gender always plays a role and shoots me again. I realized that I can not deliver content that would entertain the audience. The Pakistani public is not mature enough to accept the content and ignore the gender. During my time on the scene, I was always aware of being a woman and I thought about the consequences of my word. And sometimes I had to face them there and then and sometimes at home through social media.
  10. With everything that is shared, I do not mean that we do not have good speakers or that all experiences were bad. We have really great speakers and the most praise for my success goes to my supporters who invited me to speak. But we need a new Sunrise!

Due to the lack of awareness, people can not understand what the individual is experiencing, nor do they know how to situation or they can just become a part of society in general

What people have understood, however, is the sympathy they have towards these individuals and because they tend to see the individual differently performing a very simple task becomes an achievement.

People with disabilities are not normalized in our society. This means that we have no daily interaction with them – our teachers have no disability, the same is true with our artists, bankers, business people, doctors, etc. We do not see people with disabilities as normal people.

The message this gives to people is that when you live with disabilities, you are exceptional. Even though you may not do anything exceptional with your life

A good example is someone who has to spend his life without an arm. Yes, that person will encounter obstacles in full functionality, but there is more to his life and the way that person grows up.

Let's take an example, Asghar has to spend his life in a wheelchair because of polio. Now he may not be able to run or run like his other friends, but the rest of his experiences are the same. He looks at the same films, plays the same games and studies in the same way as they do. But he is seen as someone who is very inspiring to do things that are very normal and are part of the life of an average person. People meet people with disabilities and congratulate them because they manage to do what everyone else does – like managing their own food, giving a good presentation, eating out with friends or deciding what they want to do with their lives. .

What this does is to objectify a person to become an object of inspiration. You look at these people and drive & # 39; normal & # 39; people to be inspired to take risks with their lives and do not make excuses if they can not achieve anything.

Comedian and journalist, Stella Young, calls this inspiring porn

You look at people with disabilities and expect them to inspire you. This is what they are told, this is what is expected of them, and this is what they have to make a career of – which by the way could not end. She goes into the fact that people with disabilities overcome certain things, but it is society that ultimately has such low expectations that they are forced to stay in circles only where there are not many growth options. And that is unfair! With the growing use of social media, such inspiration pornography is further strengthened and does not help to normalize disabled people.

Yes, many people with disabilities do have inspiring stories and choose to be motivational speakers, but this is only allowed their own choice. At the same time, it is also important to give people with disabilities the space to live a normal life, so that someone who is just there is not an instrument of inspiration for non-disabled people.
