COMPUTER

*Computer is an electronic device that accepts data as input, process it and produces output.
*Computer is an electronic device which takes input from a user in a form of data and instruction and then processes the input as per the user's intructions and generates some output.
*It is an electronic device that accepts,processes,stores and displays data at a speed according to program instructions.
*It is an electronic device that changes input data into information.

BY TYPE

1.ANALOGUE COMPUTER

Handles data and information presented to it in a continuous form. It is associated with measuring instruments like voltmeter, speedometer, thermometer, etc.

2.DIGITAL COMPUTER

Handles data and information presented to it in a digital form. Digital computers are binary, they operate in two states:True/ False, Yes/ No, ON/ OFF
Examples are calculator, digital speedometer and digital thermometer.

3. HYBRID COMPUTER

It is the combination of analogue and digital computer.Example is personal computer.

BY PURPOSE
 1.GENERAL PURPOSE

It is not limited to a number of applications. E.g. personal computers

2.SPECIFIC PURPOSE

It is designed to solve a specific kind of problem E.g. speedometer, thermometer

BY SIZE or CAPACITY

Uses/Advantages/ Importance Of A computer

1) It helps in teaching and learning in the educational sector.
2)  It is used in shops for record keeping
3) It is used for research works
4) It enhances  productivity in the business sectors such as  marketing, retailing,banking, stock trading.
5) computer is used for entertainment
6)For storing large amount of information
7)For health sector to detect diseases

Disadvantages Of A Computer

1.Cost of training individuals is very expensive.
2. Computer may reduce the number of people's work therefore creating unemployment.
3.Computer can be used for fraudulent activities such as '419' (sakawa).

The Main Parts Of A Computer

There are two main types of a personal computer
1) Hardware
2) Software

HARDWARE

* Hardware can be defined as the physical components of a personal computer.
* They are parts of a computer that can be actually seen and touched.

Components of a computer hardware include;

1.Mouse
2.Keyboard
3.Monitor
4.System Unit

MOUSE

* Mouse is referred to as a mouse because it resembles the animal mouse.
* Mouse was invented by a man called Douglas Englebert in 1963.
*Mouse is used as a pointing device on a computer screen.
The mouse has two buttons
-Left mouse button
-Right mouse button
*Mouse is used to control an arrow on the computer screen called mouse pointer.

* Mouse is an input device.

1. For Clicking
2. For Double clicking

COMPUTER MOUSE

KEYBOARD

a. Computer keyboard looks like a typewriter machine.
b. Christopher Sholes invented keyboard in 1968.
c. Another name for that we use is called QWERTY because of the first six letters on the keyboard.
d. We also have DOVARK keyboard
e. Keyboard is an input device.

There Are Five Important Keys On The Keyboard
* TYPEWRITER KEYS

These are keys that are used to type letters ( alphabets),punctuation marks on the computer keyboard.

*FUNCTION KEYS

They are keys on the keyboard labeled F1, F2 up to F12(Enhanced model).
-They are usually found at the top of the keyboard.
-They are used for special functions.

* NUMERIC KEYS

-They are marked from 0-9
- Numeric keys are used to type numbers.

* WINDOWS KEYS

It is used prior to Windows XP and also known as Window logo key, start key, logo key or flag key.
Tapping this key invokes the operating systems start menu.
Ctrl + ESC performs the same function.

* ARROW KEYS (Cursor Movement Keys)

They are buttons on a computer keyboard that are either programmed or designed to move the cursor in a specified direction.

1. The standard model with 96 keys
2. Enhanced model with 104 or more.

USES OF KEYBOARD

1. For entering data
2. For playing games
3. For typing words and symbols.

MONITOR

* Monitor looks like a television screen.
* It displays in full colour the information produced from the information processing cycle
* The monitor displays how the computer responses to the input devices like mouse and keyboard.
* When a program is executed, the result is displayed on the monitor.
* Computer monitor is an output device.
- Monitor with a single colour is called MONOCHROME monitor whilst with multi color called COLOUR monitor.

TYPES OF MONITOR

1. Cathode Ray Tude(CRT)
2. Flat Panel or Flat Screen or ( LCD)
The LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display.

USES OF MONITOR

It is used to display the information on the computer.
