* Software is a set of logically coded instructions or programs designed to be used by the computer to convert data into information.
* It is defined as a set of programs necessary to carry out operations for a specified job.
* The program tells the computer what to do.
* It is the components of a computer that cannot be seen or touched.

Components Of Software

The main components of computer software are the Operations Systems and Application Software
Operating System or System Software
* It consist of all the programs, languages and documentation supplied by the computer manufacturer.
* This is the type of software that manages and controls the basic input and output devices of the computer systems.

Functions Of System Software

1) They serve as a platform to run application programs.

2) Provides a user interfere which enables the user to communicate with the computer system.
3) It manages the hardware components of the computer system.

Application Software

It is designed to accomplish a specific task like accounting, drawing, typing and browsing the internet.

Types Of Application Software

a. Word Processing Program
It allows you to type a letter or a report and changes word or move block of text around it with case.
b. Painting Program
It helps you to draw pictures on a computer. It provides tools for drawing.
c. Browser
It is used to locate and display web pages.
Application Software can be grouped into two namely;
CUSTOM - MADE and PACKAGE SOFTWARE
1. Custom- made:  Is application software that is designed for a particular customer to satisfy a specific need. They are not being sold to the general public.
2. Package Software: Is application software that is designed to be sold to the general public.
