The Internet Of Things And What You Don’t Know

Can you imagine a world without the internet or our smart devices? Think about it – how would we stay connected and interact with multiple people at one time? But we are not the only ones who are “connected” – the use of smart Technology has, it seems, taken over the devices in and outside our homes as well.

Think about it, with the increase in cloud computing leading to a spike in machine-to-machine communication, we are seeing this technology implanted in almost everything today!

From our water sprinkling systems that determine if our lawn needs to be watered or not depending on the weather conditions of the day to our smart refrigerators who actually take inventory of the stuff inside and informs us what we need to Purchase; the spread of technology has pretty much “powered up” our homes today. But what happens if this technology, one day, fails to deliver? Or worse, it ends up in the hands of someone else?

Believe it or not, this is a possibility that we must live with today because just like this technology has numerous benefits, it also has its drawbacks as well – some of which we will be discussing today.

Though these technologies look really “cool” and are considered to be the devices of the future, the truth is that they require a lot of maintenance and care. Not only do these devices tend to be more fragile from the inside, but they require a lot of daily care to keep them in working order.

Apart from that, these smart devices don’t necessarily come cheap. In fact they can put quite a dent in your pocket, especially if you purchase a device that is brand new in technology and is “all the hype”.

But if you thought that maintenance and high prices were the only drawbacks of these techies, then get this: these devices can be easily hacked. If you are thinking that you are safe from a hack, here’s some food for thought: there are more than 12 million devices which are expected to exceed 20 billion Iot Devices in the next three years. Scary right?

But not to worry – we have got you covered with some tips to ensure your IoT devices stay secure and free from any hack-attacks.

  • If you are using a smart phone, always make sure that you are using a really good anti-malware along with an anti-virus program. Some programs you could use are Kaspersky, AVG, Avira, etc.
  • Whenever you get a smart device, make sure that you read through the terms of service to see what information is collected.
  • Never, ever store personal information such as your date of birth, name, address, etc.
  • Always use a strong, complex password that includes caps, special characters as well as numbers.
