How to Fix Remote Desktop Can't Connect to Remote Computer in Windows 10

Remote Desktop is a great feature in Windows 10 computer which helps us to take control of any computer from our computer using a Remote Desktop connection and work on it from our computer as if you are working on that computer.

In simple terms remote desktop connection allows us to control our computer from another device.

Hence, it requires an internet connection. You won't be able to use remote desktop services without an internet connectivity.
However, there are several other factors also by which you can get the following error on your Windows 10 computer:-
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1) Remote access to the server is not enabled

2) The remote computer is turned off

3) The remote computer is not available on the network

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.

How to Fix Remote Desktop Can't Connect Problem in Windows 10

There are several reason you won't be able to connect to remote desktop. Some of the common reason include but are not limited to no internet connectivity, remote desktop services not started, wrong firewall settings, remote connections not allowed, etc. We will look up at all these problems one by one below.

Please go through all the steps given in this guide to solve your remote desktop can't connect problem as follows:-

1. Make sure that you are connected to Internet

Internet connection is a basic requirement to use remote desktop services. Most people who don't have much knowledge about remote desktop connection or people who are trying to connect to remote desktop services for the first time don't know actually that we need an internet connectivity to use remote desktop services.


If you are already aware of this fact, then make sure that your internet connection is working properly and there are no network failure issues. Once you have confirmed that the internet is working fine, follow the next step given in this guide.

2. Start all the Services related to Remote Desktop connection

Type Services in the search box next to Start Menu as shown below and click on Services.


The Services window will open up. Type to quickly locate Remote Desktop Configuration. Once you have located it, click on Start the service. Refer below image for more details.



Same way you have to Start the services for the other two options, that is Remote Desktop Services and Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector as shown above in the image.

Once you are done with all the steps you have successfully started Remote Desktop Services in Windows 10.

3. Allow Remote Desktop in Firewall Settings

Type Windows Firewall in the search box next to Start menu as shown below. Click on Windows Firewall to open.


You will get a window, on the left hand side click on Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall.

In the next window click on Change Settings. You have to locate and allow Remote Desktop.

Check the box next to Remote Desktop as shown below.


Finally click on Ok button and you are done.

4. Allow Remote Access to your Computer

As you have allowed remote desktop through Firewall in the previous step, in the same manner you have to allow remote access on your Computer also.

Follow the steps given below to allow remote access on your Windows 10 computer:-

Type Allow remote access to your computer in the search box next to Start menu and click on it to open.

You will get this window as shown below. Click on Allow remote connections to this computer.



You might get another window which prompts you with a message as shown below:-
This computer is set up to go to sleep or hibernation when not in use. While the computer sleeps or hibernates, people cannot connect to it remotely. To change this settings, go to Power Options in Control Panel.

So if you try to connect to remote desktop in Hibernate mode, you won't be able to do that. Make sure tat you are in awake mode before trying to connect to remote desktop.

Click OK on the message prompt.

Click on Apply for changes to take effect and then click on OK.
