World Leaders Unite for Responsible AI Use: Addressing Global Harms and Ensuring Protective Measures

In a digital world where artificial intelligence (AI) is both a source of marvel and great Risk, world leaders are joining forces to call for more responsible use of the technology. Highlighting grave global harms such as hate speech, disinformation, and attacks on democracy, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is urging the international community to take action and implement protective measures.

Guterres’ AI Advisory Board: UN’s Efforts in AI Initiatives

Guterres has taken it upon himself to create an AI advisory board, involving experts from various UN agencies, to handle AI-related initiatives. He proposed establishing a global AI agency, modeled after the IAEA, to enhance safety measures for AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman urged the US Senate to create an office dedicated to setting AI standards. This resonates with the EU’s recent passing of the world’s first-ever AI legislation.

We cannot ignore the threat posed by AI-generated media. In June, the UN warned about the dire implications for information integrity, focusing on deep fakes on digital platforms. The S&P 500 dip from a fake news story spread by AI highlighted the real risks involved.

Maximizing the Potential of Advanced AI: Necessity of Government Oversight

The UN is developing a voluntary Code of Conduct for governments, digital platforms, and other stakeholders. It will aim to reduce climate change, protect human rights, and boost public health. The September 2024 Summit of the Future, attended by inter-government representatives, is a prime opportunity to promote the Code.

Blair, Hague, and other proponents propose international cooperation to establish a UN framework with “urgent safeguards” against AI risks. Advanced AI poses opportunities and risks, necessitating government oversight to maximize its potential for progress.

Trust in AI: Key for Harnessing its Potential for Humanity

But for any meaningful action to take place, the necessary investment in public administration is missing. The Secretary-General highlighted that existing strategies may not suffice due to the power and impact of AI-driven systems.

The future of AI is tied to humanity’s fate, requiring us to take swift and thoughtful actions to safeguard it. Trust is essential for leveraging AI’s potential to benefit humanity amid the ongoing digital transformation. And that trust must be underpinned by regulatory calls and ambitious measures.
