The Top 10 Twitter Moments of 2017

Now that 2017 is over, it’s time to take a collective breath and give ourselves some kudos for getting through what was, by all accounts, quite a rollercoaster ride. Since it’s not our style to dwell on the bad stuff, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the Top 10 Twitter Moments of 2017.

Since Twitter moves at lightning fast speed, with up to 280 characters since November 2017, we wanted to wait until the year was actually over before we finalized our list. Let us know if you think we missed something by joining in the conversation on Twitter or Facebook by using #AcanacTopTwitter2017.

10. Italy loses in the World Cup qualifiers

What happens when the country that lives and breathes soccer doesn’t qualify for the June 2018 World Cup? A category 4 Twitter meltdown. The hashtag #ItalyApocalypse was trending along with so many sad, angry and confused tweets. Italy has been in the World Cup every year since 1958. Goalie Buffon even had a tearful exit. We are sure Italy will be back next time around.

9. Game of Thrones star engaged to a Jonas Brother

Sofie Turner, better known as Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones, got engaged this year! And no, not to some prince from a neighbouring kingdom, but to Joe Jonas, formerly part of boy band the Jonas Brothers. Fans of the show quickly got on Twitter to make their best GoT jokes. Some of our favourites are here and here.

8. KFC only followed herbs and spices

This is genius. The KFC account only follows 11 accounts – the Spice Girls and six men named Herb. This makes up 11 herbs and spices, part of the famous secret recipe of KFC’s chicken. Cool right? We’re not sure how a clever Twitter user figured that out, but we’re pretty happy that the KFC Social Media team got some well-deserved kudos.

7. Netflix account during Stranger Things 2 launch

Undoubtedly, Stranger Things is one of the most popular shows on the streaming service right now. When Stranger Things 2 launched, Netflix went all out. They changed their bios to reflect the release, and replied to Millie Bobby Brown’s tweet, the lead actress who plays “Eleven”. They even had thought-provoking tweets like this and this.

6. Carpet Instagram account goes viral

Jill Young’s father Bill travels for a living and made a hotel room carpet Instagram account because of all the hotels he stays in. She tweeted about the account and it went viral. The father-daughter duo have even been interviewed by journalists, appearing on POP Sugar and Buzzfeed. The account now has over 220,000 followers, with Jill’s original tweet at over 24,000 likes.

5. K-pop group BTS broke Twitter engagements record

Yes, there was a record for Twitter engagements. And K-pop group BTS broke it in November of this year. Guinness World Records revealed in a statement sent to HuffPost that the band holds the world record for the most Twitter engagements. On average, they get 252,200 retweets per tweet. BTS dethroned Harry Styles, from boy band One Direction.

4. Victoria’s Secret model falls at show

The VF fashion show is a popular television special, pre-taped, that features the newest collection of lingerie for the season. Since the special is pre-taped, the VS team will edit out all the awkward or false delays… usually. What they decided to NOT edit out is one of the models falling. Twitter had stuff to say about that.

3. The Last Blockbuster

This spoof account claims to be the Last Blockbuster store left in business and lists a non-descript address in its Bio along with a note that they are not affiliated to Blockbuster Corporate, “We’re all on our own”. Whoever is running this account must be a seasoned comedy writer because their daily tweets about what its like to work in the Last Blockbuster in the age of Netflix keeps their 284,000 followers in absolute stitches. One of our favourites: “A lot of people don’t know this but we own a large portion of Netflix. Just kidding our electricity just got shut off.”.

2. Donald J. Trump

We can’t have a Twitter roundup of the year without mentioning arguably the most talked about tweeter this year: Donald Trump. We won’t delve into politics here but since he is the first US President to essentially use Twitter as a platform to communicate with his supporters and even announce new policy, there is no denying that his tweets are definitely newsworthy.

1. Wendy’s Owns Twitter

Wendy’s loves to poke fun at Internet trolls, but they also don’t shy away at taking shots at competitors. On Black Friday, Wendy’s held nothing back on McDonald’s. We assume the McDonald’s social media coordinator forgot to update their scheduled link but instead of deleting the tweet, they owned up to their mistake. Wendy’s decided to never let them forget it with this tweet.

Oh, and we didn’t even mention the most retweeted tweet of all time which also happened in 2017.
