Why Solar Rooftop makes sense for India?

400 million people in India still have no access to electricity. This is mostly because Electric grid still has not reached vast swathes of the country. Moreover, electricity supply to those who have the access is still intermittent because energy production is not keeping up with its demand. Factors leading to energy shortfall in India ranges from poor infrastructure and bottlenecks in fuel supply. The government may or may not succeed in making India energy independent but citizens of India can easily do so by installing Solar rooftop in their home.

Residential Solar Installation makes the most sense in India due to many factors. India has the highest electricity production per kilowatt solar installation is the highest compared to any other country in the world. This is because of India’s geographical location on account of which it receives abundant tropical sunshine and clear skies 300 days a year.

Unlike other renewable sources like hydel and wind, Rooftop Solar panel doesn’t have high initial investment which allows ordinary households to generate their own electricity. Solar panels for roof are now very cheap due to intense competition.  Moreover, solar panels on roof don’t have any moving parts which require constant up-keeping. On-grid Solar Rooftop system doesn’t require batteries which are expensive and require regular maintenance. Thus, maintenance cost is out of the equation when considering Solar PVs. Residential solar installation operates for over 25 years which more than covers the investment cost. In fact, breakeven is achieved merely in 5 to 7 years. By installing solar rooftop panels from reliable providers, household energy bill can be reduced by 50%.

On-grid Solar PV system can draw electricity from the grid when the sun is not available like during night-time. This ensures stable power supply. Unlike large Solar Parks, residential solar installations don’t need large tracts of land which is scarce in India. Also, Power generation from the sun doesn’t produce waste like greenhouse gases as in thermal power plants or radioactive by-products as in the case of nuclear plants. It is the greenest and safest energy source and for India, it beats all options for power source.
