Router Modes? Commands To Use?

Hello Friends, Today I'm going to tell you about the modes in the routers and the commands which we can used in different modes. You can read What is Router? Ports used in Router and its booting process from Here.

Let's continue..

When you switch on the router, you can access router on your pc using putty software after the router is loading it will ask you Would you like to configure initial dialogs? Yes/no

  1. If you write yes then router will enter into setup mode but here we can only configure limited router settings. Router will ask questions to configure settings.
  2. If you press no then router will enter in CLI mode where we can fully configure the router.
The Command Line Interface primarily used to configure, monitoring and maintaining Cisco router. There are following modes in the CLI:-

  • User EXEC Mode
  • Privileged EXEC Mode
  • Global Configuration Mode
  • Interface Configuration Mode
  • Sub interface Configuration Mode
  • ROM Monitor Mode

User EXEC Mode:
When you enter in the CLI the first Mode is the User EXEC Mode there it will maybe ask you to enter password if you enable the console password. This mode allows you to connect remote devices, perform basic tests and list system information. The User EXEC Mode consist of the Hostname (By default Hostname is Router) followed by angle bracket (>) as shown in the above image. You can easily know which commands will work in this mode just by entering question mark(?). It will list all the commands. The commands will vary on different routers due to its IOS software.

Privileged EXEC Mode:
To enter into privileged mode you have to enter the "ENABLE" command into the User EXEC Mode. You can also add a privileged-level password to protect from unauthorized access. There you can enter two type of passwords, one is in encrypted mode while other is not. This mode consist of router name followed by pound sign(#) as shown into the above image. In this mode you can copy, save, erase and check the Configuration using commands. You can also check connectivity and reload the router. To simply check all commands use question mark. Use disable command to go back to User EXEC Mode.

Global Configuration Mode:
This mode is used to configure system globally and to enter subconfiguration to configure interface and protocols. Use config terminal command into privileged mode to enter into global configuration mode. The prompt for global configuration mode is showing hostname followed by (config) and pound(#) sign. Use question mark to list all the commands in this mode. To exit from this mode ypu can use Ctrl+Z or exit command.

Interface Configuration Mode:
You can enter in this mode from the Global Configuration Mode. This mode is used to configure the Interface available on the router like Serial, Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet. The command to configure Interface is "Interface Type Number" here type is the interface which you want to configure and number is the particular interface number.

Sub Interface Configuration Mode:
From Interface Configuration Mode you can enter into Sub Interface Configuration Mode. The prompt for this interface is hostname followed by (Config-If) and pound(#) sign. Here you can assign interface IP Address and Subnet Mask. You can also add virtual interface also.

ROM Monitor Mode:
ROM Monitor Mode also called Boot Mode. This mode runs from the software image, used to locate a valod system image from which to boot the system. From where you can perform diagnostic tests. In most of the systems you can enter ROM Monitor Mode by reload EXEC command then router will reload then enter break command Ctrl+C during the startup of the router.
