Now, one expert has revealed that the virus ‘could burn out naturally’ before a vaccine is developed.
Professor Karol Sikora, former director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Cancer Programme, tweeted the claims over the weekend.
He wrote: “There is a real chance that the virus will burn out naturally before any vaccine is developed.
“We are seeing a roughly similar pattern everywhere – I suspect we have more immunity than estimated.We need to keep slowing the virus, but it could be petering out by itself.”
Several Twitter users replied, questioning Professor Sikora’s evidence for these claims.
He explained: “It is my opinion that this is a feasible scenario.“Nobody is claiming to know what will happen for sure – I believe in an unknown situation this is a possibility.”
However, Professor Sikora highlighted the importance of maintaining social distancing to reduce the spread of the virus.
He added: “We need to continue to keep our distance and hope the numbers continue to improve.”
His claims come as Business Secretary Alok Sharma revealed that plans are in place to roll out a COVID-19 vaccine to 30 million people by September if trials are successful.Speaking at Sunday’s Downing Street news conference, he said: “In order to definitively conquer this disease we need to find a safe, workable vaccine.
“Last month I announced a new vaccine task force to co-ordinate the efforts of government, academia and industry in the critical mission to find a vaccine.
“I’m very proud of how quickly our scientists and researchers have come together in their efforts developing a vaccine that will combat coronavirus.”
