New Anti-Drone Gun Will Blast Drones Out of the Sky From 1.2 Miles Away

New Anti-Drone Technology Take Out Drone From 1.2 Miles Away

With the rise of consumer Drones, every government official from the military to Border Patrol are always trying to find new and effective ways of controlling rogue drones. Many anti-Drone guns that currently exist have been too expensive or unsafe to use in populated areas. At least that was the case until yesterday. Let’s introduce DroneGun. This anti-drone “gun” was created by Australian company, DroneShield and was officially unveiled on Monday. DroneShield says they will be marketing their device globally “to customers who are legally able to purchase it,’ which would include government and military agencies to civil infrastructure and VIP protection.

Why do we need this technology?

This device was designed as a countermeasure against drones flying where they shouldn’t be. This would include airports and other restricted air space. What makes this device so vastly different than other devices that defend the airspace is that it does not fire projectiles at the offending drone.  Instead, DroneGun is designed to jam electromagnetic waves, causing the drone pilot on the ground to lose control of their vehicle. The gun can disable the drone signal from as far as 1.2 miles away and with a simple push of a button by the operator, can send the drone soaring rapidly back to the ground.

This pretty neat feature gives the operator the option to trigger the drone’s “return to home” function, making it easier for authorities to locate the perpetrator to investigate the motive behind the possible illegal flight. Potential organizations that would be equipped with this new technology will have the opportunity to disable threats from a safe distance, and potentially locate the drone pilot.

Is it really practical?

There are many anti-drone technologies that have come out over the past year, but this is one of the few that actively rendered drones inoperable. At 13-pounds, DroneGun is portable enough to be usable by one person. Which makes this rifle-shaped device more practical for everyday use for the military and other defense organizations. It is currently not FCC-certified, and the general public may have to wait until the licensing agencies can get all their ducks in a row before being able to shoot drone’s out of the sky at will. I know… disappointing.
