How to Find the Wi-Fi Password of the connected Networks

This is a guide which deals with finding Wi-Fi Password of the current connected network using simple commands on Windows as well as Mac

In a situation when your desktop or laptop is connected to a Wi-Fi network but you forgot the password you used to connect this particular network. May be you forgot the password or the original owner do not want to let you know the password.

Now the dream is to connect another device to that same network to which your desktop or laptop is connected and for that you need the password. I will show you how you can retrieve the password using a simple command. This procedure works for both Mac and Windows.

For Windows

1. Open up the command prompt in administrator mode

2. Now simply copy and paste the command given below in cmd and remember to change GT and write your network SSID (name of the network to which you are connected).

netsh wlan show profile name=GT key=clear

3. Now you will get a list of details of the network to which you are connected.

4. Under Security Settings the lowermost option "key content" shows the thing which you are looking for.

Now you got the password and you are ready to connect other devices with the same network.

For Mac

1. Open Spotlight (Cmd+Space) and type terminal to open terminal window

2. At the command line simple write:

security find-generic-password -ga GT | grep password

and replace GT with the network to which you are connected and then enter your Mac username and password to access the OS X keychain

3. Now you will see a list of items but you just have to see the bottom line which displays the password in inverted commas.

Start WLAN AutoConfig (Wlansvc Service)

There are many windows users which are face the following error while retrieving the password using the above procedure:
"The Wireless AutoConfig Service (wlansvc) is not running"
So for those users there is a quick fix

1. Press Win+R to open Run dialog box.

2. Type in "services.msc" and you will be greeted with windows services.

3. Here just go to Wlan Autoconfig service and make sure that status displayed is shown as running .

4. Else if it is not running right-click on "WLAN AutoConfig" service and go to Properties and then         select Dependencies.

5. Check all the Dependencies to check whether they all are running.
