New Game Releases: December 14th-20th, 2017

With the holiday shopping season rapidly coming to a close, the bulk of this week’s new game releases will be offered on Digital storefronts rather than from retail shelves and warehouses. Once again, we see Nintendo Switch dominating the dedicated hardware space, with a multiple of titles that range from new experiences like Romancing SaGa 2, Dragon Fang Z: The Rose & Dungeon of Time, to ports of Enter the Gungeon and Yooka-Laylee.

Robert’s Pick: Sure, Tokyo-based Toydea might not have the recognition or catalog of developer like Idea Factory or Nippon Ichi. But their headquarters in located next to the Akihabara JR rail station, so they definitely have otaku credibility. But more importantly, their inaugural Switch effort, Dragon Fang Z: The Rose & Dungeon of Time, looks to capture the nuances of Spike Chunsoft’s Mystery Dungeon series, bringing a pleasing, picturesque Rogue-like to Nintendo’s system. While it’s definitely derivative, the sprite work looks attractive, and the soundtrack is melodic, so I’ll be dungeon crawling this week.
