Which club has received the most yellow cards in Premier League history?

Since the English First Division was rebranded as the Premier League in 1992, the English top flight has arguably gone from strength to strength. In the last 31 years, some teams have shined with great football and skill.

However, some teams have also got themselves in hot water with officials when it has come to discipline on the pitch and received Yellow Cards. What teams have received the most cautions in Premier League history?

Chelsea (1893 yellow cards)

The team with the most Yellow cards is Chelsea, who have received 1893 cautions in the Premier League era. The presence of the Blues at the top of this particular ranking is not that surprising, considering they have been just one of the six ever-present teams in the Premier League.

The south west London outfit has also received 78 red cards in the new era of the English top flight. One former Chelsea player who loved a booking during his Premier League career was midfield maestro Dennis Wise, who received 68 cautions in the current era, many of which were received playing the Blues.

Everton (1867 yellow cards)

Another ever-present in the Premier League, the Toffees have picked up 1867 yellow cards in the current era. Their high rank on this list may not be that surprising, as the men from Merseyside are the club with the most red cards in the Premier League.

The presence of a fiery Scottish forward, Duncan Ferguson, for much of his career has contributed to their yellow and red card count, as the striker received eight red cards in his career in the top flight.

The two players with the most yellow cards in Premier League history, Wayne Rooney and Gareth Barry, also represented the club in the English top flight.

Arsenal (1797 yellow cards)

The Gunners have received 1797 yellow cards in Premier League history. During former boss Arsene Wenger’s time as head coach of the north London club, they earned a reputation for being a combative team.

No player was more combative than French midfield enforcer Patrick Vieira, who earned himself 79 yellow cards and eight red cards in his Premier League career.

Tottenham Hotspur (1797 yellow cards)

Spurs have, down the years, had a reputation for being a team that likes to play football. However, as their presence at number four on our list shows, they are not afraid to put their foot either, as they have received 1797 yellow cards in the Premier League era.

Considering Spurs have been one of only six clubs to be ever present in the Premier League, their position is unsurprising. Spurs have also received 61 red cards in the current era.

Manchester United (1777 yellow cards)

The Red Devils were always going to be on this list, as during the Premier League era, United have had some of the most fiery players in the English top flight.

For instance, club legend Wayne Rooney received 101 yellow cards in the Premier League, with most of them coming while in a United shirt. One-club man Paul Scholes also picked up 99 top-flight cautions during his playing career with the men from Manchester.

West Ham (1667 yellow cards)

Despite not being ever-present in the Premier League, the Hammers have accumulated 1667 yellow cards in the current era of top-flight football.

The likes of Scott Parker and Kevin Nolan represented the club, with the pair receiving 92 and 86 cautions, respectively, in the Premier League era. The Hammers have also received the sixth most red cards in the English top-flight’s current guise.

Aston Villa (1665 yellow cards)

Like West Ham, Villa has spent time outside the English top flight during the last 31 years. However, that has not stopped the Villans from collecting 1665 yellow cards in the Premier League.

Serial collector of yellow cards Gareth Barry started his professional career with the club from the Midlands. The England midfielder certainly made a small contribution to the club’s overall yellow card record.

Newcastle United (1613 yellow cards)

The Magpies have had their ups and downs, having suffered relegation several times. However, the north east club have still managed to collect 1613 Premier League yellow cards. The likes of Kevin Nolan, Scott Parker, Joey Barton, Gary Speed and James Milner, who are some of the worst offenders for yellow cards in the Premier League, have all pulled on the black-and-white striped shirt.

The Magpies are also number three on the list of Premier League clubs with the most red cards, having picked 80 dismissals.

Liverpool (1495 yellow cards)

Considering the Reds are another one of those ever-present Premier League clubs, a record of 1495 yellow cards is to be expected.

Former Liverpool players Paul Ince, James Milner, Jamie Carragher, Steve Gerrard and Emile Heskey are all amongst the players with the most Premier League yellow cards. Liverpool have also received 56 red cards in the Premier League era.

Manchester City (1458 yellow cards)

The reigning English champions are not among the Premier League ever-present. However, they have still accumulated 1458 cautions in the current English top-flight era. Once again, City has employed some of the players with the highest yellow card count in the Premier League era.

Gareth Barry, Joey Barton, Richard Dunne, James Milner and Pablo Zabaleta have all pulled on a sky-blue shirt in the Premier League.
