Who scored your club’s first Premier League goal?

Since the rebranding of the First Division to the Premier League in 1992, the league has brought just as many thrills and spills, if not more, than its predecessor.

As many of you may know, Sheffield United striker Brian Deane scored the first goal of the Premier League era in a 2-1 win over Manchester United. However, who scored the first Premier League goal for each current English top-flight member?

Arsenal (Steve Bould)

The Gunners’ first Premier League goal was scored by a relatively surprising scorer, in the shape of centre-back Steve Bould, on 15th August 1992.

The defender’s effort proved fruitless, though, as the strike came in a 4-2 defeat against Norwich City at Highbury.

Aston Villa (Dalian Atkinson)

Striker Dalian Atkinson was something of a cult hero for Villans fans, and it was fitting that the striker should be one to score the club’s first goal of the new era.

The goal came in a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road on August 15th 1992.

Bournemouth (Callum Wilson)

The Cherries have flitted between the Championship and the Premier League from 2015 to the present day.

Their first-ever goal in the English top-flight’s current guise was scored by striker Callum Wilson in their first-ever Premier League win, a 4-3 victory at West Ham on 22nd August 2015.

Brentford (Sergi Canos)

The Bees have now seemingly firmly established themselves in the Premier League.

However, they didn’t make their debut in the competition until August 13th 2021, when they recorded a 2-0 home win over Arsenal, with Spanish midfielder Sergi Canos making history with their first Premier League goal.

Brighton (Pascal Gross)

The German midfielder Pascal Gross scored the Seagulls’ first goal in the Premier League on 9th September 2017 in a 3-1 home win over West Brom.

Gross wasn’t content with one goal, though, as he bagged a brace in the win, which was Brighton’s first in the English top flight for 34 years.

Burnley (Robbie Blake)

The Clarets first-ever Premier League goal was scored by club favourite Robbie Blake.

The forward’s superb volley came in a shock 1-0 win over the reigning champions Manchester United on 19th August 2009.

Chelsea (Mick Harford)

The Blues’ first Premier League came from seasoned striker Mick Harford in a 1-1 draw with Charlton at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of season 1992/93.

The forward scored nine goals in the inaugural Premier League campaign before a move to Coventry City the following summer.

Crystal Palace (Mark Bright)

The Eagles’ first-ever Premier League goal came from club hero Mark Bright in a 3-3 draw against Blackburn Rovers on 15th August 1992.

The goal was Bright’s only Premier League strike for Palace before he moved to Sheffield Wednesday in September 1992.

Everton (Barry Horne)

The Toffees first goal of the Premier League era came from the unlikely source of Welsh defensive midfielder Barry Horne, who scored in a 1-1 home draw against Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the 1992/93 season.

The reason Horne was an unlikely goalscorer is that he scored just three top-flight goals in four seasons on Merseyside.

Fulham (Louis Saha)

The Cottagers first ever Premier League goal was scored by French striker Louis Saha in a 3-2 home defeat by Manchester United on 19 August 2001.

The forward went on to have a successful career in the English game, also scoring goals for Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham in the Premier League.

Liverpool (Mark Walters)

Winger Mark Walters was the first Liverpool player to score for the Reds in the Premier League, scoring in a 2-1 win against Sheffield United on 19th August 1992.

Walters went on to score just 11 Premier League goals in three seasons.

Luton Town (Carlton Morris)

The Hatters are the team who have most recently registered their first Premier League game.

Town’s first goal in the current era of the English top-flight came from striker Carlton Morris, who scored in a 4-1 away defeat by Brighton.

Manchester City (David White)

David White was the first Citizens player to score a Premier League goal, as the forward scored in a 1-1 home draw with QPR.

The game was Sky Sports’ first Monday night football. White went on a hot streak in the season’s early stages that saw him win his only England cap.

Manchester United (Mark Hughes)

Manchester United’s opening day 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United became famous due to the Blades’ Brian Deane scoring the first-ever goal of the Premier League.

However, it was another forward, Mark Hughes, who opened the Red Devils’ scoring account of the current era.

Newcastle United (Andy Cole)

The prolific striker Andy Cole scored Newcastle’s first-ever Premier League goal in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at St. James Park.

Cole would later go on to become prolific in the red of United in the English top flight.

Nottingham Forest (Teddy Sheringham)

The Tricky Trees kicked off the Premier League era with a 1-0 home win over Liverpool on the opening day, with striker Teddy Sheringham scoring the game’s only goal at the City Ground.

Sheffield United (Brian Deane)

One of the most iconic goals of the Premier League era was Brian Deane’s strike on the opening day of the competition against Manchester United in a 2-1 win.

As previously mentioned, it was the first-ever Premier League goal.

Tottenham Hotspur (Gordon Durie)

Tottenham fans had to wait until the 22nd of August 1992 for their first Premier League goal, which came from Scottish striker Gordon Durie in a 2-2 capital derby with Crystal Palace at White Hart Lane.

West Ham (Dale Gordon)

The Hammers first goal of the Premier League era came from winger Dale Gordon in a 1-1 draw with Coventry City at Highfield Road.

Just 12,864 fans witnessed the close-range effort.

Wolves (Steffen Iversen)

The team from the Midland’s first Premier League goal came in the shape of a consolation goal from Norwegian forward Steffen Iversen against Blackburn Rovers in a 5-1 2003 defeat at Ewood Park, as at the time, Wanderers were already five goals down.
