Barca club’s achievement is partly due to the gathering of the best players in the world such as Messi, Xavi … and the gameplay is also very different.

Establishment and the first years

At the end of the nineteenth century, the city of Barcelona entered an industrialized period that attracted many foreigners to live and work. Joan Gamper, a Swiss accountant who has a passion for Football decided to set up a football club for his own. On November 29th, 1899; many people were registering to join Joan Gamper’s football club. 11 players from England, Switzerland, and Germany decided to start a football club called Barcelona.

The eldest Walter Wild was chosen as the first president, while Joan Gamper was elected captain and first treasurer of FC Barcelona. On 08th December 1899; the first match between Barcelona and the British living in Catalan was organized with the final scores of 0-1. However, in the first match with FC Madrid, Barcelona beat them 3-1.

1923-1939: Civil war period

On the 25th anniversary of the club’s founding, Barca inaugurated the Les Corts Stadium. At that time, they attracted many talented players like Samitier, Sargi-Barba, Pierre, Sancho. This is also the reason for Barca to achieve many championships in this period. In Catalan, Barcelona was the first champion of La Liga in 1929.

However, because of the world crisis in 1929, Barca had to sell the best players to have enough money to maintain the team. Moreover, Barca also encountered the obstacles of Franco’s dictatorship. Franco let one of his close people take over as president of the club and changed Barca to “Club de Fútbol Barcelona” as in Spanish.

The period from 1939 to 1988

From the 1950s, many famous players joined Barcelona such as Hungary, Ladislao Kubala, Luis Suarez, Zoltán Czibor, Sándor Kocsis. In 1962, Evaristo headed the ball and helped Barcelona have a chance to enter the first European Cup final. Barca is the only team in the history of European football that has never been absent in domestic and foreign matches.

After that, Les Corts Stadium did not have enough spaces, so they had to change to the Nou Camp. This is one of the two largest stadiums with a capacity of up to 90,000 spectators. Currently, the Nou Camp is even considered as a European football sanctuary that attracts thousands of tourists each year.

The Dutch coaches

Johan Cruyff, a Dutch football legend, officially became the head coach of Barcelona. Under his time, the history of Barcelona had entered a new era called “Dream Team”. In 1992, the football club had the honor of winning the European Cup trophy. However, in the 1994 European Cup final, Johan Cruyff was unable to maintain his “Dream Team” strength by losing with a score of 0-4. After this tournament, Johan Cruyff was forced to quit his job at Barcelona.

In 1996, Barca had to spend up to $19.5 to bring Ronaldo to their team. After that, Louis van Gaal was selected as the coach of Barcelona. Barca won two La Liga titles in 1998 and 1999 with the National Cup of the 1997-98 season. However, after that, Barca had to lose Luis Figo to competitor Real Madrid and sold Ronaldo to Inter Milan, which affected negatively to their performance.

Furthermore, Barca has lost good players like Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars, Frank de Boer, or Phillip Cocu. As a result, Van Gaal had to leave, another Dutch coach, Frank Rijkaard replaced him. However, with the lead of Frank Rijkaard, Barca still did not win any trophies. It was not until Barca chose Samuel Eto’o and Deco as the team’s coaches that the team played better. The proof is that Barca defeated Real Madrid with a score of 3-0 in the 2004-2005 season.

Entering the following season (2005-2006), Barca officially had the young player Lionel Messi, who would later become one of the best players in the world. In La Liga, Barca did beat Real Madrid with a score of 3-0 at the Bernabeu. In 2006, Barca successfully defended their 18th La Liga championship.

The golden age with Guardiola (2008-2012)

From the time Pep Guardiola took over as Barca’s head coach, the club entered the golden age with 6 championships, which not any team had ever reached before. Specifically, Barca won many championships in the same club season: La Liga, Champions League, King’s Cup, Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup, and World Cup Club.

In the 2009-10 season, Barca successfully won 3 titles of the European Super Cup, Super Cup of Spain, and Intercontinental Cup. However, in the European Cup, Barca lost the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League semi-final against Milan. For Catalan fans, this failure led to Barca’s unsuccessful season.

In the 2010-11 season, Barca officially became the world champion in 2010 after many goals scored by striker David Villa. In the same year, Barca defeated Real and won the La Liga championship. In the 2011-12 season, the Catalan team had a good start when beating Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup with an overall score of 5-4. However, in this season, Barca won only one title of the King’s Cup and ranked below Real Madrid in La Liga after losing 2-1 in the Nou Camp.  After 4 years with Barca, coach Pep Guardiola decided to leave the club because he was impossible to renew the team after four successful years.
