The Greatest Premier League Upsets in History

Top Premier League Upsets in History

If you’re a football fan and in particular a fan of the Premier League, then you’ll know that no game is ever really a sure thing.

To prove a point, we’re going to look at the greatest Premier League Upsets in football history which show that the underdog should never be discounted and don’t forget, you can check out all your favourite teams and how they’ve faired over the years by visiting our Premier League Records page.

Manchester United Lose to Burnley

The first of our upsets happened on the 19th of August 2009 when Burnley beat Man Utd 1-0. It was Burnley’s first Premier League game in 33 years and a stunning Robbie Blake goal secured victory for the underdogs.

Burnley suffered defeat to Stoke 2-0 and were sure to lose this game too. but the goal followed by Brian Jensen’s penalty save led them to win and a lot of unhappy United fans lost their sports bets.

Chelsea lose to Sunderland

Our second upset and win for the underdogs is from the 14th of November 2010 when Chelsea lost to Sunderland by a massive three goals.

Chelsea, defending champions, were sure to win after Sunderland lost to Newcastle two weeks previous 5-1. Sunderland however had defied odds with a goal from Nedum Onuoha, a second by Asamoah Gyan, and Danny Welbeck’s third to take them to victory with lots of happy fans taking home the cash.

Manchester United Lose to Leicester City

It was a big shock when Premier League title holders Man United lost to Leicester City on the 21st September 2014.

United were winning 3-1 in the early second half things turned quickly. Leonardo Ulloa scored a goal as did David Nugent, Esteban Cambiasso, and Jamie Vardy which took the underdogs to victory.

Liverpool Lose to Bradford City

The 14th of May 2000 was the end of another Premier League season and Liverpool needed to win in order to secure their spot in the Champions League. It wasn’t to be. Bradford City took the match 1-0 with a goal from David Wetherall.

Arsenal Lose to Hull City

This was perhaps the biggest Premier League shock from 08/09. Arsenal lost 1-2 to recently promoted side Hull City. A long-range goal from Geovanni along with Daniel Cousin’s header left Arsenal Wenger’s side gutted.

Football Upsets Throughout History

It’s not just the Premier League teams that see underdogs fighting back and securing victory, there have been football upsets throughout history which is what makes football so exciting.

It’s also what makes gambling fun especially if you use accumulators. Some of the biggest football upsets include the Uruguay vs Brazil World Cup match of 1950. Brazil, the host nation, was expected to win and take the cup too. However, second half goals from Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia saw Uruguay secure victory.

Another shock surprise came in the 2002 World Cup in the match between Senegal and France. This was Senegal’s first ever appearance in the World Cup and they were facing the cup holders and European Champions in their opening game.

The French team consisted of the likes of Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira. France had a very strong team and were favorites to win. Instead, they struggled and Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal of the game after half an hour. Senegal reached the last eight in the tournament.

Sports Betting and the Underdog

You can never really tell which team are going to come out victors and if you enjoy sports betting, there is always plenty of markets for the Premier League. Not knowing what will happen makes gambling fun and accumulators are something you’ll want to try.

In fact, accumulators tend to be the second top choice with betting enthusiasts and they have low stakes too. The thing with accumulator bets, is that they turn a wager on a series of single events into one bet with increasing odds. What this means is that winnings are higher compared to placing single bets on each event.

Placing multiple bets at a time leads to more excitement and if you get all the predictions correct, you increase your winnings exponentially. You don’t need to bet a lot to have an accumulator that could pay out thousands if it’s correct. Not sure? Try some free bets which you’ll find here and test things out for yourself.

We do recommend looking for Acca insurance and accumulator free bets as well as checking out all the latest premier league team predictions before placing your wagers.

One of the biggest factors for sports betting fans is to get a great price on their accumulators and to do this, they need to find the right bookmaker. This will ensure the best odds, features, and markets.

How Accumulators Work

There’s not a lot to understanding how accumulators work especially if you are already familiar with sports betting. Accumulators are simply single bets that you place on events that are linked together. You can link any sporting events as long as they’re not related.

Related bets are those where one outcome could influence another. An example of this would be betting on the first goal scorer and a correct score in the same Premier League fixture as a double bet. You can’t do this. These related bets are called contingencies and there are special bets for these.

Accumulator bets can be used to link independent sporting events together even if you are using In Play options. You win if your prediction comes true. If you lose even one event you lose your bet unless you have insurance. The great thing about accumulators is that the odds increase so each selection you add into your accumulator enhances the payout.

If one of your selections is void, it won’t void your accumulator, it just means that your selection will be dropped from an accumulator with 5 picks to one with 4 instead – depending on course on what you choose when you place the bet.

Accumulators are a great way to have fun and take a chance on the underdogs as well. As you’ve seen from the upsets above, you never know when the top team will lose, and you walk away with a huge payout because the odds on the underdog always come with a larger payout – even if your ‘acca’ has two or three times on it
