Arsenal scraped a late winner against lower league opposition Preston North End in their FA Cup tie thanks to a late Olivier Giroud winner. However, the Londoners had to work hard to get through to the next round or even avoid a replay of the same fixture due to drawing the match.
After going down in the first half, goals from Aaron Ramsey and Giroud – who was the captain for the day – were enough to get the job done for the Gunners. Arsene Wenger later praised the French striker for displaying good leadership qualities, saying he deserved the captaincy.
A video from the Tunnel area at Preston showed just why Wenger trusted the striker with the armband. Talking to his team-mates in order to get their spirits up, Giroud can be heard saying to “show something else”, perhaps in a bid to avoid getting knocked out so early in the competition.
