Women’s Euro 2017 Training Drills: Germany

Play like Germany– Midfielder Combination

Surely the favourites, Germany are chasing their SEVENTH straight title this year at the Women’s Euro 2017. Their winning streak goes all the way back to 1995 and they’ll certainly look to extend that. In 2007, the Germany women’s football team were the first to win two consecutive Women’s World Cup titles and on their way to doing so, achieved the biggest win in tournament history by beating Argentina 11–0.

1-Unopposed

Set-Up

  • 3 players in middle
  • 9 players on the outside
  • 4 players on the outside with the ball
  • Multiple balls
  • Rotate numbers every minute – 3 minutes then swap players over

Player 1 – Will show on angle to Receive the ball.

Player 2 – Receive from player 1 on angle in front to play to player 3.

Player 3 – Player receives the ball plays it out to the outside players.

Key Points

  • Receive ball on back foot to play forward
  • Don’t play on the same line as each other
  • Check shoulder to receive
  • Weight of pass
  • Timing of the run and support on the ball
  • Play in front
  • Create space – go long to receive short

2- Opposed

Set-up

  • 3 players
  • 8 players on outside
  • 1 player defender
  • 4 player with ball on outside
  • Rotate numbers every minute – 3 minutes then swap players over

Key Points

  • Receive ball on back foot to play forward
  • Don’t play on the same line as each other
  • Check shoulder to receive
  • Weight of pass
  • Timing of the run and support on the ball
  • Play in front
  • Create space – go long to receive short

Challenges

  • How many passes can the defenders get when winning possession of the ball.

3 – Condition Game

Set-up

  • 4 teams of 3 players
  • 25 by 25
  • Footballs
  • Bibs

Aim of the session is to create 3 passes then combination within your team to then play out to score, this will gain a point for the team.

Key Points

  • Rotation of players to create space and opportunity to create space.
  • Combination play
  • 1 touch and 2 touch passes
  • Weight of passes
  • Positive first touch
