Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been struggling to fit into the Gunner’s first team plans this season and it looks like the Englishman could be leaving the Club this summer.
The midfielder has made 22 league appearances for the club this season, scoring one goal in the process. However with the emergence of Alex Iwobi and Joel Campbell also playing well this season it has been hard for the player to warrant a place in the starting eleven.
It has been revealed that Saints captain, Jose Fonte, has had a word with the player about a return to his former club Southampton:
“I know how good he is,” Fonte told Just Football. “We played together when he was only 15 or 16. So I’ve known him for a long time, And I am not going to lie: we talked about it [going back].
“I asked him, I spoke to him, I am good friends with him. I want the best for him but what can I say? He’s an Arsenal player. He’s happy there.
“He has the quality to be a star player at Arsenal but what I mean is we would love to have him back.If we want to put a team out to fight for trophies, to fight in European competitions, why not?
“He knows he has a place in our hearts and he knows that anytime he wants a place in Southampton he has it. We are going in the right path. We want to achieve better and bigger things. So it’s up to him.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain was only 16 when he made his move to the North London club and made his debut when the Gunners were hammered 8-2 at Old Trafford. He has made 149 appearances for the club and scored 14 goals.
However the midfielder will only have two years to go on his contract come this summer which is why the rumours have started flying around.
