The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Shawn Matthias to the Colorado Avalanche for a 4th round pick in 2016 and 22 year old prospect Colin Smith.
Matthias signed with the Maple Leafs in the 2015 offseason as a UFA, playing 51 games total and potting 6 goals and 11 assists.
With the NHL Trade Deadline only a week away, GM Lou Lamoriello isn’t wasting any time, first shipping out Dion Phaneuf in a 9 player deal with the Ottawa Senators on February 9th, and now pulling the trigger on this deal with Colorado. It appears management is focused solely on the long-term vision, as neither deal help the Leafs in any way in the immediate future.
Colin Smith comes to the Leafs with a pretty solid AHL resume. So far this season Smith has 13 goals and 34 points in 54 games with the San Antonio Rampage. With Mark Arcobello likely sticking at the NHL level for the remainder of the season, the Marlies add more depth for what is expected to be a long playoff run.
