The BRITs: What a difference a decade makes

The BRITs are fast approaching with the 36th edition of the annual awards set to take place on Wednesday at The O2, we have decided to take a step back into the past and rewind through a decade of BRIT history to see how the biggest night in the British music calendar has come full circle.

Hosted by Chris Evans and set in the historic Earls Court, the 2006 awards saw a clean sweep by the Kaiser Chiefs who won awards for British Group, British Live Act and British Rock Act respectively. How times change.

We were also serenaded with a live performance by a youthful Kanye West, who performed smash hits Gold Digger and Diamonds from Sierra Leone before walking away with the award for International Male Solo Artist.

Rocking baggy denim blue jeans, white trainers and a red/gold jacket that would put the late, great Michael Jackson to shame, Yeezy looked like a different person to the man he his now.

Completing the look with those sunglasses (remember), back then it would have been hard to believe he’s the man behind the biggest fashion range in the urban scene right now.

In the 10 years since, sports brand and music hook-ups have rocketed. Kendrick Lamar, a nominee for the aforementioned award alongside Nike-endorsed Drake and Justin Bieber, is now the face of Reebok’s trainers.

Fellow nominee The Weeknd will also perform on the night but fans will be kept guessing over whether Rihanna will make her scheduled performance. The recent birthday girl is fighting to overcome a bout of bronchitis that forced her to cancel her Grammys slot.

With one eye on the awards, the Bajan superstar will also have this Friday in mind when she launches her highly anticipated new PUMA trainer. It’s been a whirlwind decade for the 28-year-old who, back in 2006, was only gearing up to release her second studio album A Girl like Me.

Spare a thought for former British sensation Lamar, though. The now defunct award of Best Urban Act went to him that year and who knows what he’s up to now.

International Female Solo Artist went to the ever extravagant Madonna who sported an elegant red dress, far from the head-turning saucy looks she would opt for in years to come. This time around, Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor lead the way as favourites to scoop the award.

Celebrating British music, the BRIT awards of 2006 saw KT Tunstall crowned British Female Solo Artist and James Blunt British Male Solo Artist. A decade on, neither are around, let alone up for awards.

Coldplay bagged the award for British Album Of The Year and have stood the test of time with another nomination in the same award all these years later with A Head Full of Dreams.

But they do have to compete against the record breaking 25 by you-know-who.
