NYC Soccer Recap: Red Bulls Top Union, NYCFC Fall to Montreal

Brothers Come Up Big as New York Red Bulls Top Philadelphia Union 3-1

How’s that for a debut in the City of Brotherly Love? Recent signing Shaun Wright-Phillips shined in his first action for the Red Bulls, drawing a penalty and supplying his brother, Bradley, with an excellent assist as the visitors defeated the Union 3-1 at PPL Park. The win marked New York’s first triumph in three 2015 matches against Philadelphia and may carry an air of revenge following last month’s heartbreaking US Open Cup quarterfinal defeat on penalties. Indeed, it was a penalty that opened the scoring for the Red Bulls as Sacha Kljestan converted from the spot. The Wright-Phillips brothers combined soon after, and a late breakaway effort from Anatole Abang sealed the three points.

With the win, Jesse Marsch’s side jumped over the Columbus Crew for second in the East. Despite sitting nine points behind conference leaders D.C. United, the Red Bulls hold four games in hand. Up next for New York is a trip to Montreal—that match, slated for this Wednesday, kicks off at 8pm ET.

Despite Frank Lampard’s Debut, New York City FC Fall to the Montreal Impact 3-2

This time, NYCFC came out on the wrong end of another defense-less day in the Bronx. A poor first-half display ultimately doomed the boys in blue to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Montreal, who raced out to a 2-0 lead through Dominic Oduro and Ignacio Piatti before David Villa pulled one back with just over 20 minutes to play. Even with Frank Lampard’s long-awaited introduction, the visitors notched another through Piatti, making Tommy McNamara’s late strike a mere consolation (though Villa’s skillful backheel was likely the game’s best highlight).

The defeat knocked Jason Kreis’ side down to eighth in the East, three points behind Orlando City and the Impact. Now, with all three Designated Players in tow, NYCFC will turn to next Sunday’s derby against the Red Bulls. That match, being played at Red Bull Arena, is slated for 7pm ET.

Cosmos Top Fort Lauderdale for First Win of Fall Campaign

After coming up empty in their first three games of the Fall campaign, the Cosmos finally grabbed their first win of the second half with a 2-0 victory over the Strikers at Shuart Stadium. Hunter Freeman put the hosts in front with a cross that drifted into the top corner before Leo Fernandes sealed the three points with a good finish after latching onto Raúl’s slick through pass. New York’s defense took care of the rest as goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer earned his first clean sheet of the Fall season.

Up next for the Cosmos is a Wednesday meeting with Minnesota United before traveling to Florida for another matchup against Fort Lauderdale. A win in the first of three games in seven days should provide plenty of momentum for Giovanni Savarese’s busy side.
