Chile Repeat as Copa América Champs

The 2016 Copa America Centenario is over and it feels like we’ve been here before. For the second straight year, Chile are champions after outlasting Argentina in a penalty shootout.

After 120 action-packed but scoreless minutes, Chile defended their Copa America crown and sent Lionel Messi and Argentina home empty handed once again.

Regulation time saw two red cards handed out. One to Chile’s Marcelo Diaz, who picked up two yellow cards 28 minutes into the match and put his team at a disadvantage very early on.

However, Argentina’s Marco Rojo would even the playing field just after halftime with a tackle from behind that the flamboyant and controversial referee, Heber Roberto Lopes, deemed worthy of a straight red card.

The best chance of the 90 minutes fell to Gonzalo Higuain who had a clean 1 v 1 chance with the goalkeeper, much like he had in the 2014 World Cup Final, and was unable to finish his golden opportunity.

Extra Time was a back and forth, high intensity session that saw Argentina almost break the deadlock. Sergio Aguero headed a Messi free kick on goal, but Claudio Bravo pulled off one of the best clutch saves you’ll ever see.

That would be the best chance either team had of deciding the match on their own. Instead it would head to a penalty shootout where Arturo Vidal’s first attempt for Chile would be saved. Up stepped Messi as his team’s first taker to give them the advantage. Surely he would convert, right? Nope.

Chile would convert the rest of their spot kicks with Bravo saving Lucas Biglia’s attempt in the fourth round. Francisco Silva stepped up in the final round to clinch the Copa America for his country once again.

A year and many, many miles later, this Copa ended exactly as the previous one had. With La Roja lifting the cup.

Earlier in the weekend, Colombia beat the United States, 1-0, in the tournament’s third-place match. AC Milan striker Carlos Bacca notched the lone goal to send the Americans home in fourth place.

That wraps up the exciting Copa America Centenario. What began as a tournament created under sketchy circumstances, ended with a passionate and hard fought display for the beautiful game. When we look back at this tournament, we’ll have to consider it a massive success.
