Colombia, Argentina & Chile Round Out the Copa América Semis

The final four of the Copa America Centenario is set after a topsy-turvy weekend. The United States booked their trip to the Semifinals on Thursday and got to sit back, relax, and watch the other three quarterfinal match-ups play out.

It all started on Friday night where another Group A country earned a spot in the semifinals as Colombia beat Peru in a penalty shootout after regulation ended 0-0. This tournament offers a bit of a weird format as every knockout round match except for the final goes straight to a shootout after 90 minutes.

Colombia made all four of their attempts while Peru failed twice, including this spectacular kick save by David Ospina to advance to the next round.

Saturday offered two tasty match-ups that ended up being romps. Argentina took care of business against Venezuela with Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi leading the charge. The latter set up the former for the first goal of the match.

Venezuela gifted Higuain another goal to make it 2-0 but then earned a penalty that could’ve gotten them back in the match. Only for Luis Sejias to attempt one of the worst panenkas you’ll ever seen.

Messi would score his fourth goal of the tournament to finish off the match and tie Gabriel Batistuta for Argentina’s all-time goal record. They’ll play the USA in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Mexico and Chile concluded the quarterfinals with what many thought would be the tie of the round and possibly the best match-up of the tournament. Instead we witnessed one of the most lopsided matches ever seen in a major international tournament. Chile anhiliated Mexico to the tune of 7-0.

Seven. Zero.

Eduardo Vargas’ four-goal performance catapulted him into the tournament’s golden boot race. There were no standout goals of the seven, just a collective masterpiece. Here are all seven goals:

There was one piece of bad news for the defending champions as their star midfielder Arturo Vidal will be suspended for the semifinal against Colombia after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament.
