Colombia Clinch, USA Back in the Driver’s Seat on Day 5 of Copa América

The United States men’s national team rebounded from their opening group match loss with a resounding 4-0 win against Costa Rica to kick off the second round of Group A play. It was the Clint Dempsey show as the USMNT’s second all-time leading scorer responded to questions about his spot in the lineup with a 1 goal, 2 assist performance to lead the Americans to a vital victory over their CONCACAF rivals.

After Dempsey got the scoring starting with an early penalty — that happened to be his 50th career international goal — his brilliant incisive run through the heart of the Ticos backline helped set up Jermaine Jones for a lovely curling shot that left Patrick Pemberton with no chance.

Just minutes later, Dempsey again would play provider as he played in Bobby Wood at the top of the box. The Hamburg striker turned and fired a fantastic finish into the back of the net to give the U.S. a 3-0 lead before the half-time break.

With the convincing win, the U.S. are now in great position to advance to the knockout stage.

Colombia capped off the night by squeaking by Paraguay, 2-1, in a thriller. James Rodriguez was one again the star for Los Cafeteros as he recorded a goal and an assist on the night. The Real Madrid star didn’t enjoy the club season very much, but the international stage is once again where his star shines brightest. He scored Colombia’s second goal of the match with a clinical finish from the left side of the box.

However, Paraguay wouldn’t go down without a fight as Victor Ayala scored the goal of the tournament so far to make Colombia sweat. Colombia held off a late charge to pick up three more points.

After two matches played in Group A, Colombia have clinched a spot in the quarterfinals, while the USA are in the driver’s seat for the second spot heading into their last match against Paraguay on Saturday.
