Recapping a crazy opening weekend to Copa América 2016

The much-anticipated Copa America Centenario finally kicked off on Friday night when the hosts USA dropped a tough one to the No. 3 ranked team in the world, Colombia. Two set piece goals propelled the Colombians to a 2-0 win. The biggest talking point of the match was a late first-half penalty kick that was awarded after a questionable handball call on DeAndre Yedlin:

James Rodriguez would easily convert the penalty to follow up the early goal Colombia had already scored and the U.S. were unable to break through on the score sheet.

Day two provided very little excitement with just one goal between the three matches that were played. Peru scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Haiti. Meanwhile, Brazil vs. Ecuador and Costa Rica vs. Paraguay each ended 0-0.

Venezuela topped Jamaica in the Day three opener, 1-0. Andre Blake got 5-holed on the goal. There was a red card. Wes Morgan made an appearance off the bench despite word that he would not feature in the match. And a cameraman took a ball to the head (video above). However, all eyes were on Mexico vs. Uruguay during the nightcap.

The match lived up to expectations as a sleepy Copa America finally received a shot of adrenaline with El Tri prevailing 3-1, extending their unbeaten streak to an amazing 20 matches. Veteran defender Rafa Marquez’s laser beam strike in the 85th minute proved to be the match-winner:

Mexico are in incredible form and appear to be one of the tournament’s favorites as of right now, but we still got a lot of soccer left to be played. Follow along with us on Twitter as the tournament rolls on.
