When you think of CONCACAF, Mexico is likely the first country that comes to your mind. They have been the dominant force in North and Central America for as long as the region has competed in international play. They enter the Copa America Centenario in fine form having won the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and beating their rivals, the USA, for a spot in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Mexico usually shows well in international competition when they bring their full strength squad. They could be primed for a spectacular tournament if certain circumstances fall their way.

Key Players
Two of the most prominent Mexicans in world soccer today are Javier “Chicarito” Hernandez and Andres Guardado. Both are coming off of fantastic seasons for their respective sides. If they can replicate their club form in the Copa America it would likely bring Mexico a long way in this tournament. Hernandez, as the country’s main goal threat, will have a big say in just how far El Tri will progress. He is likely a Golden Boot candidate if Mexico fair well in the Copa America.
Group Stage Schedule
Mexico were drawn into a rather favorable group. Their competition includes Jamaica, Uruguay, and Venezuela. They have to be favorites to make it out as one of the top two finishers.
- Sunday, June 5 — Mexico vs. Uruguay, 8:00 p.m. ET — Fox Sports 1
- Thursday, June 9 — Mexico vs. Jamaica, 10:00 p.m. ET — Fox Sports 1
- Monday, June 13 — Mexico vs. Venezuela, 8:00 p.m. ET — Fox Sports 1
New York City Spot
Take your pick, really—aside from the U.S., Mexico will have the most citywide supporters than any other World Cup nation. Neighborhoods like Corona, Queens, and Sunset Park, Brooklyn, should be prime locations for cheering on El Tri, but head to Williamsburg’s Cantina Royal for some of New York’s best Mexican dishes.
Closing Thoughts
Mexico are flying high entering the Copa America and have the benefit of a home-field advantage playing so close to home. It’s expected that they’ll have strong support throughout the tournament. Couple this with a favorable group draw and you have a recipe for potential success. While on paper they might not be considered contenders to win, a less than full-strength field of rosters gives them a huge opportunity to lift the cup.
