NYC Soccer Preview: Red Bulls Visit Kaká and Orlando, Cosmos Face Armada

New York Red Bulls vs. Orlando City — Saturday, July 18 — 7:30pm ET

Fresh off a resounding win over the Revolution, the Red Bulls will look to take their scoring form to the Citrus Bowl for a big test against Orlando City. Jesse Marsch’s side has picked up three wins in its last four and shrugged off many of the criticisms that arose during the team’s difficult month of June. While the back line remains relatively thin, the goals have been flowing for Bradley Wright-Phillips and surprise contributors Anatole Abang and Mike Grella. Added to Lloyd Sam’s return from injury and the combination play of Dax McCarty and Sacha Kljestan, the Red Bulls attack is brimming with confidence.

Orlando will have confidence of its own, however, as Kaká returns from a one-game suspension to command the midfield. Even with last weekend’s loss to FC Dallas, the expansion side’s home-field advantage remains one of the best in the league, especially with the sticky conditions in central Florida. Orlando may have some concerns with a weakened front line and a makeshift defense missing U.S. international Brek Shea, but having their Brazilian talisman back in the fold could be the key to another home result.

A win for New York would take the visitors back above the Columbus Crew for second in the East while gaining valuable ground on leaders D.C. United.

New York City FC vs. New England Revolution — Saturday, July 18 — 7:30pm ET

Mid-season slides don’t get much worse than New England’s five-game losing streak, something that should give NYCFC plenty of confidence as they head to Foxborough for Saturday night’s encounter. It was the Red Bulls who most recently topped the Revolution by a margin of 4-1, a rout that exposed New England’s defensive issues and showed why they’ve only claimed one win in their last 12 league games.

For Jason Kreis’ side, back line struggles also persist—just look at last weekend’s 4-4 draw with Toronto FC. However, the club recently added defenders Angelino, Jefferson Mena, and Andoni Iraola with hopes of clamping down in the final third, although we’ll be deprived of another debut as Frank Lampard looks set to miss the trip to New England. Still, David Villa’s shown that he can carry the attack with eight goals in his last seven games, and options like Patrick Mullins and Tommy McNamara have played well in recent weeks.

Look for NYCFC to start with a high tempo and plenty of attacking play, as they always seem to do. If anything’s going to prevent the visitors from claiming a second win of the season over the Revolution, it’ll be difficulties on the defensive side of the ball.

New York Cosmos vs. Jacksonville Armada — Saturday, July 18 — 7:30pm ET

Two weeks after drawing 1-1 with Indy Eleven to preserve their unbeaten regular season, the Cosmos will pay a visit to Jacksonville for the second match of the Fall Championship. New York could very well be heading to Florida on the back of a victory—Giovanni Savarese’s side controlled long stretches against Indy but ultimately needed Walter Restrepo’s second-half strike to rescue a point.

The Armada, meanwhile, haven’t enjoyed the second half of the campaign with three losses in their opening three matches. It’s been a surprising start for a team that pushed for the Spring title, and an early goal differential of -7 is even more stunning. New York will hope to capitalize on those defensive concerns through Lucky Mkosana, Leo Fernandes, and Restrepo, a pacy trio that’s shouldered much of the Cosmos’ offensive load in 2015.
