NYC Soccer Recap: Red Bulls Top Orlando, Cosmos Suffer First Defeat

New York Red Bulls

It wasn’t pretty, but the Red Bulls will take it. A contentious night of officiating decisions—marked by a red card shown to Orlando City’s Cyle Larin—couldn’t prevent New York from claiming all three points at the Citrus Bowl with a 2-0 victory. Goals from Sacha Kljestan and Mike Grella led the way for the visitors, who often looked second-best compared to the home side but defended well in key moments. Dax McCarty also turned in an excellent display in midfield, providing the link from defense to attack and setting up Kljestan for his opening rocket in the first half.

With the win, the Red Bulls moved closer to Eastern Conference leaders D.C. United, who fell to FC Dallas on Saturday night and now lead Jesse Marsch’s side by six points with three more games played. Up next for New York is Tuesday’s US Open Cup quarterfinal tie against the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena before Wednesday’s friendly against Chelsea and a weekend friendly against Benfica.

New York City FC

NYCFC know a thing or two about snapping winless streaks, something the New England Revolution accomplished with Saturday’s 1-0 victory over the boys in blue at Gillette Stadium. The win ended a five-game losing stretch for the hosts, who notched an early strike through Lee Nguyen and held on for the remainder of the contest as David Villa and the NYCFC attack struggled for opportunities in the final third. Ned Grabavoy’s red card early in the second half didn’t help, either, and the Revolution were a few Josh Saunders saves away from adding onto the scoreline.

Though the loss keeps Jason Kreis’ side next-from-bottom in the East, NYCFC are only eight points behind the second-placed Red Bulls and three points behind Orlando for the final playoff slot. They’ll have their own shot at Kaká and company next Sunday at Yankee Stadium in a match that could very well see the Brazilian, Frank Lampard, and Andrea Pirlo on the field at the same time.

New York Cosmos

After 11 matches, the Cosmos’ unbeaten run has finally come to an end. New York may have looked the better side in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to the Jacksonville Armada, but a lone goal from Tommy Krizanovic was enough to halt the Cosmos’ sparkling run and send Giovanni Savarese’s side to the bottom of the NASL Fall table. Chances for Sebastian Guenzatti and Walter Restrepo ultimately went begging while top-scorer Lucky Mkosana drifted in and out of the contest and struggled to replicate his recent form.

Now, the Cosmos will head to the Midwest for next Sunday’s meeting with Indy Eleven, who currently sit in the middle of the standings.
