Here’s Cricket Huddle back at it again with another State of Cricket podcast episode! India could not hold South Africa off, which led to their first loss of the tournament. They didn’t even get to put up many runs on the board. Only a meager 133/9 was hit in the first innings, with only three batters crossing double figures and one person accounting for 51.1% of the runs scored for the Men in Blue. However, unlike the Asia Cup, there was a proper bowling attack that got them back in the game despite a low score to defend. I mean, the game did go into the last over and was won with only two balls left. Let’s open the floor up to our panel and find out more thoughts about this game.

The fielding wasn’t the best display in today’s game for India. Virat Kohli dropped what could be described as a sitter. Captain Rohit Sharma had a shy at the stumps in a runout attempt at the non-striker’s end but missed. Still, a positive to look at was India did manage to score another 84 runs after being down to 49/5. Even after losing early wickets and things would look dire, at least India wouldn’t fully collapse and not get a reasonable total up on the board. The same thing happened in the Pakistan game too: 31/4 to 160/6. At least the good thing is that this loss happened during the Super 12 and not the semi-finals, that way we can learn from our mistakes and adjust. The bowling is only getting better, India is still a well-rounded team. Just one minor blip on our road to victory, one might say!

Among the topics in the remainder of the episode, you will hear thoughts about how India needs to get better at facing the short ball. I feel like this is a problem in the IPL too, most notably with the Kolkata Knight Riders, so it’s an issue to tackle in domestic cricket and work the skills back up to the top. We also discuss the role of no. 4-6 batters, the concerns of overworking Hardik Pandya, proper fielding positions for players (particularly picking on Sharma and Kohli), and much more.
