University on a vibrant Saturday morning in Immaculata, Pa.
Maintaining a narrow 4-3 lead after eight innings, Swarthmore surged
ahead with six crucial insurance runs in the ninth. However, the Mighty
Macs staged a remarkable comeback, matching Swarthmore's scoring output
with seven runs of their own in the bottom half, forcing the game into
extra innings.
In the tense 10th inning, Aidan Sullivan emerged as a hero for the
Garnet, delivering a decisive RBI single to reclaim the lead. Alexander
Rimerman sealed the deal with a flawless scoreless frame, securing the
hard-fought win.
Sullivan proved to be a formidable presence at the plate for Swarthmore,
reaching base four times and showcasing his prowess with a stellar
3-for-5 performance, including a triple and a walk. Max Roffwarg and
Noam AuYeung also contributed with a pair of RBI each, bolstering
Swarthmore's offensive onslaught.
Immaculata refused to surrender quietly in the bottom of the ninth,
mounting a relentless offensive surge. With one out, Josh Crowding and
Ryan Struble drew walks, setting the stage for a dramatic sequence of
events. Despite Swarthmore securing the second out, Immaculata rallied,
loading the bases with Nick Turnage's single to right field. Jay
Lawrence then delivered a pivotal hit to score Crowding, reigniting the
Mighty Macs' hopes. Sal Serici's timely single brought home Struble and
Turnage, while Joey Sacco's walk loaded the bases once again. Shawn Haut
capitalized with a clutch double to left field, driving in Serici and
Joey Mazzone, who pinch ran for Lawrence. Joey Wright's single to right
field sealed the dramatic comeback, knotting the score at 10-10.
Notably, all seven runs in the inning were scored with two outs,
highlighting Immaculata's resilience.
With this hard-earned victory, the Garnet (10-5) will return home,
poised to face off against No. 17 Misericordia University on Tuesday. The Mighty Macs (9-6) will visit Lebanon Valley on Tuesday.
