Phillies acquire All-Star pitcher Michael Lorenzen from Detroit; send Bailey Falter to Pittsburgh

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-handed starter Michael Lorenzen from the Detroit Tigers for a minor league prospect, the team announced on Tuesday.

Lorenzen, 31, was an All Star this season, starting 18 games for Detroit while compiling a 3.58 ERA. He's collected 83 strikeouts while posting a 1.10 WHIP. The nine-year veteran has a career 4.02 ERA and has spent time as both a starter and reliever.

Second baseman prospect Hao-Yu Lee is going to Detroit in the deal, Philadelphia's No. 5 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The Phillies signed Lee out of Taiwan in 2021. The 20-year-old second baseman has hit .283 with a .372 on-base percentage and 14 stolen bases in 64 games for High-A Jersey Shore this season. With Bryson Stott and Trea Turner secure in the middle infield, Lee was expendable.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said before Tuesday's contest in Miami that Lorenzen could potentially start Thursday's series finale against the Marlins. He also said the club will move forward with a six-man rotation for the foreseeable future.

In another move on Tuesday, the Phillies shipped left-handed hurler Bailey Falter to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for shortstop Rodolfo Castro. Falter, 26, has struggled this year, posting a 5.13 ERA over eight appearances. He was sent down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley back in May and hasn't made a major league appearance since.

Castro, 24, has played 78 games with Pittsburgh this season while hitting .228 with six homers and 22 RBIs. He's been at Triple-A Indianapolis since July 16.

The Phillies secured a thrilling 3-1 victory over the Marlins on Tuesday night. The club scored three runs in the final frame with Nick Castellanos delivering the big blow with a game-winning two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie.

The Phillies sit nine games over .500 and hold the second of three Wild Card positions. The Marlins, Brewers, Giants, Diamondbacks, and Cubs are all within 3 1/2 games in the Wild Card race.
