After opening their managerial search with an exhaustive list of candidates a little less than a month ago, it appears the Phillies are inching towards naming a new skipper.
The club is expected to complete first round interviews with external candidates early this week and bring finalists back for a second interview with the plan on announcing a new hire around Nov. 1.
There are five confirmed external candidates offered opportunities to interview, including A’s third-base coach Chip Hale, Dodgers director of player development Gabe Kapler, Mariners bench coach Manny Acta, Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway, and Giants third-base coach Phil Nevin.
The Mets introduced Callaway as their new manager in a Monday news conference.
We already know the Phillies interviewed three internal candidates: Juan Samuel, Jorge Velandia, and Dusty Wathan.
Other unconfirmed but potential candidates include Red Sox bench coach Gary DiSarcina and former Tigers manager Brad Ausmus.
The Phillies have kept the entire process shrouded in secrecy so at this point anything aside from confirming names is purely speculative.
"A new voice in the dugout and a new style is necessary," general manager Matt Klentak said following the firing of Pete Mackanin, essentially saying he wants to bring youth and analytics to the dugout.
The Phillies have invested heavily in analytics and creating internal metrics. The new manager will need to have an understanding of how numbers are changing the game.
Among the internal candidates, Velandia previously worked as an assistant to Klentak in 2016 and also has general manager experience with LaGuaira in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Wathan, 44, is the all-time winningest manager at double-A Reading and was twice named Eastern League manager of the year.
Samuel, 56, has been a Phillies coach since 2011 when he was hired by former general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. to be part of Charlie Manuel’s staff.
