Joel Obi Scores As Mba Is Sent Off! How Nigerian Players Fared Abroad Last Weekend


With most of the leagues abroad now over, we take a look at how Nigerian players  and players of Nigerian descent have fared this past weekend.

In the Bundesliga, Anthony Ujah came off the bench to set up the goal that saved Werder Bremen from relegation. The 25-year old came on in the 60th minute, and set up Bremen’s goal in the 88th minute, as they beat Frankfurt 1-0 to remain in Germany’s top-flight.

Karim Onisiwoplayed the entire duration for Mainz, but fired blanks in the goalless draw with Hertha Berlin. He earned a 49th minute yellow card for his troubles. Meanwhile, Leon Balogun remained on the bench all through.

In the Premier League, Alex Iwobi was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing of relegated Aston Villa in the Gunners’ final game of the season. Meanwhile, Nigerian-born Canada U20 defender Fikayo Tomorimade his debut as the Blues were held 1-1 by champions Leicester City. John Obi Mikel was however not listed.

West Ham lost 2-1 at Stoke City and Emmanuel Emenike came on in the 61at minute, while Victor Moses only came on for the final four minutes.

Kelechi Iheanachoscored his 14th goal of the season against Swansea and it proved to be his most important and it earned Manchester City a place in next season’s Champions League courtesy of the 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t the same story for Odion Ighalo, who ended his season firing blanks, in Watford’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland.

Away from the Premier League, in France’s Ligue 1, Vincent Enyeama ended the season with a clean sheet, making it 17 in the league, in Lille’s 1-0 win at St Etienne. Elderson Echiejile was however missing in Monaco’s 2-0 win over Montpellier, as he watched from the bench.
Afcon 2013 hero, Sunday Mba was sent off in Yeni Malatyaspor’s 1-3 loss to Boluspor in the Turkish PTT 1 Lig, while Okechukwu Azubuike was a 46th minute entrant. Kenneth Omeruo featured in Kasimpasa’s 7-0 routing of Mersin.

 Godfrey Oboabona played all 90 in Rizespor’s 1-0 win over Gazientepsor. In the same game, Gbenga Arokoyo watched from the bench, while John Chibuike was taken off after 77 minutes.

Joel Obi started and scored in Torino’s 2-1 loss at Empoli, and lasted for 77 minutes. Ogenyi Onazi also started for Lazio against Fiorentina, while Jerry Mbakoguwas thrown to the bench for Carpi’s game at Udinese after missing two penalties the previous weekend.
