African Stars Of The Weekend: Bakambau, Onyekuru Steal Show


Well, what a fantastic weekend it was for Africans in the European leagues, particularly Cedric Bakambu who was the hero for Villareal as well as a host of Nigerians who scored on the weekend the country marked her 57th year of independence.

ENGLAND
Alex Iwobi Scored the clincher as Arsenal comfortably saw off Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0. It was his first of the season.
Mame Biram Diouf finally got off the mark for Stoke this season as the potters saw of Southampton at the bet 365 stadium. Diouf has been adapting to a new wing back role this season and did well to open his account this season.

Eric Choupo-Moting was also in action for the Potters. Though he failed to add to his 2 goals, he did lay on the assist for Peter Crouch’s late winner in the 2-1 win.

SPAIN
Cedric Bakambu notched a hatrick for Villareal in a comfortable 3-0 win over Eibar. The Congolese striker is now the top scorer for the yellow submarine this season with 5 goals.

GERMANY
Salomon Kalou was the Hero for Hertha Berlin as they came from 2-0 down at home to Champions Bayern Munich, to earn a 2-2 draw. It was the Ivorian’s 2ndgoal of the season for the capital club.

ITALY
Kalidou Koulibaly helped Napoli continue their virtuoso start to the season with the 3rd goal in a 3-0 romp over Cagliari. 
The partenopei have made a record breaking start to the season, and the burly Senegalese has contributed 2 goals to the course.

FRANCE
Souleyman Camara was the hero for Montpellier as they earned a 1-1 draw at the home of Champions Monaco. 

The veteran Senegalese striker came off the bench to salvage a point with an equaliser in injury time. It was his 2nd goal of the season, making him the club’s highest goal scorer this season.

Karl Brillan Toko Ekambi showed that he wasn’t just about his beautiful name as his 3rd goal of the season for Angers pulled Les Scoïstes to within one goal at home to Lyon. Angers eventually found and equalizer to make it 3-3, via Ivorian defender, Ismael Traore.

BELGIUM
Henry Onyekuru can’t stop scoring at the moment as he continues to prove an instant hit at Anderlecht. The 20 year old Nigerian sensation notched his 4th goal of the season in the 89thminute as the Belgian giants saw off Standard Liege 1-0.  

He did get a yellow card for taking off his shirt in celebration, but considering the importance of his goal in such an important fixture, one cannot deny him his right to a little indulgence.

Emmanuel Dennis was another to mark Nigeria’s independence with the opening goal for Club Brugge in their 2-1 win over Moses Simon’s Genk. It was the 19 year old’s 5th goal in his 6th appearance, in what has been a remarkable start to the season.

Taiwo Awoniyi was also on the scoresheet for Royal Excel Mouscron as he added to Cameroonian forward, Fabrice Olinga’s opener to put the 2-0 ahead at home Mechellen. The visitors however fought back to earn a draw, included a 92nd minute equalizer.

Mamadou Fall got off the mark for Sporting Charleroi, scoring the second half winner away to Sint-Truiden.

TURKEY
Sofian Feghouli scored the opener for Galatasaray in their thrilling 3-2 win at home to Karabukspor. It was the 2nd goal of the season for the Algerian. 

Malian striker, Moustafa Yatabare was on the scoresheet for the visitors.

William Troost-Ekong scored his second goal of the season for Bursaspor and provisionally brought them back on level terms away to Kayserispor. However, he couldn’t prevent the hosts running out 3-1 winners.

Aminu Umar scored the final goal in Osmanlispo’s comfortable 3-0 win at home to Kenneth Omeruo’s Kasimpasa.

FINLAND
Reuben Gabriel was the hero for Kups as his brace helped the come from behind to win 2-1 at Inter Turku. The 88th minute winner was the 27 year old midfielder’s 7th goal of the season for Kups.
