Football is a lucrative sport and there is a reason why academies and agencies are being set up. The supply of talent is far greater than the demand for talent but somehow the wages seem to be increasing at strange rates. For those who happen to play at the very top, big earnings are guaranteed. 

To this we decided to do our homework a bit and find the top Highest Paid Nigerian footballers currently in the game. 

The figures are mind-blowing considering it is estimated at weekly earnings but then again, where were we when they were putting in long hard work? And yes, recession is just a word to these players.

With no further ado, here are our top 7 highest Paid Nigerian Footballers.

Odion Ighalo, Watford
Odion Ighalo, N10m per Week With Watford
The Watford striker comes in at 7th position with a weekly wage of £25k per week with the Hornet. Ighalo, who joined the Club in 2014, has a contract with the English side till 2021.

Although the length of time remaining on his contract has not put off numerous Chinese clubs who are very much interested in signing the player.

Victor Moses, Chelsea.

The phoenix at Stamford Bridge comes in 6th position with his £50k weekly wage with Chelsea. The Blues' midfielder signed a four year contract with the club in 2015 that would expire in 2019. 

With Moses enjoying his time at the club under Conte, little surprise should come if he is rewarded with an extension and improved contract.

Ahmed Musa, Leicester City.

Vice-captain of the Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa joins this list at number five with an impressive £60k wage with the reigning EPL champions. 

Musa who joined the Foxes this summer from CSKA Moscow has a contract that runs till 2020. The Nigerian international would be hoping for better spells after the break as he has had mixed performances so far with Leicester City this season.

Mikel Obi, Chelsea.

Following vice-captain in this list would be the captain of the Super Eagles Mikel Obi. The Chelsea midfielder holds veteran title at Stamford Bridge having been at the club for ten years now. 

Mikel currently earns about £75k per week with the Blues but would be looking for a club in January as Chelsea do not look to be renewing his contract which expires July next year.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Man City.

Ujah, who is currently with Liaoning in the Chinese Super League, earns a whooping £95k per week with the Chinese club with his contract spanning till 2019.

At number one would be no other than big boy millionaire Obafemi Martins. Obagoal leads the lot with a staggering £140k per week with the Chinese club. The former Nigerian international is quite a journey man and has earned his money on his travels. 

Since leaving Inter Milan, Martins has played for seven different clubs that include Russia, U.S.A, Spain etc. before landing in China. It seems in earning the big bucks adaptability cannot be a problem.
