Aston Villa star backed for shock West Ham move

West Ham United have been backed to sign one of Aston Villa's star players in the next transfer window.

Basement side Norwich City look destined for a swift return to the Championship.

And West Ham and Aston Villa are locked in a five-team battle to avoid filling the last two relegation spots.

The Hammers sit 16th, out of the bottom three on goal difference. Meanwhile Villa are second bottom with a game in hand, but face a very tough run-in.

West Ham and Villa relegation battle on hold

It is not clear when, how - or indeed if - the season will resume.

But Villa are one of the favourites to drop given their dreadful form before the enforced break and their difficult fixture list.

If the Birmingham claret and blues are relegated, West Ham could sign one of their star players, John McGinn.

That's according to former Premier League star turned pundit Noel Whelan.

Villa star McGinn backed for West Ham move

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said West Ham need a player like McGinn.

“He’s an international as well so he’d be the sort of person that would fit into a Newcastle role, probably a West Ham role as well, to be honest, Whelan told Football Insider.

He’s the sort of player that West Ham and Newcastle need. There’s loads of talent in that kid, there really is. I was really impressed when I saw him play for Aston Villa at the start of the Premier League, he doesn’t look out of place, he looks very comfortable in the top flight.

“There will be many clubs interested if Aston Villa do go down, he’s probably one of their stars on the fringe of moving.”

Whelan is spot on in terms of McGinn's profile fitting West Ham's philosophy.

Fellow Scot fits Moyes's rebuild plan

Hammers boss David Moyes has ripped up the club's recruitment.

And he has made it clear he wants to build a new-look West Ham around young, hungry talent with plenty of energy.

McGinn ticks all those boxes. And it won't hurt that he is a fellow Scot either.

He has been one of Villa's better players in a disappointing return to the top flight.

Injury was expected to keep him out for the season. But he is one of the players to benefit from lockdown as it has enabled the 25-year-old to recover in time to play some part should matches resume.
