Mark Lawrenson predicts West Ham vs Saints, makes strange claim about Hammers' last match

Mark Lawrenson backed West Ham to beat Southampton tomorrow, when writing his regular prediction column for BBC Sport, whilst making a strange claim about the Hammers' away performance at Liverpool.

The east London outfit are in real trouble at the moment. They are currently sitting in 18th spot in the Premier League table, one point adrift of safety.

The good news is that they are guaranteed to move outside the drop zone if they beat the Saints tomorrow, with Aston Villa in Carabao Cup action.

West Ham put in a very good performance last time out away at Liverpool. But they must now translate that display into tomorrow's game at the London Stadium.

And Lawrenson told BBC Sport why he believes the Hammers will rack up a vital three points:

I just think this such a huge game for West Ham that they will know they have to win. The Hammers were very competitive and combative against Liverpool on Monday night, and looked better defensively. I know David Moyes' side scored twice, so it might sound a bit silly, but I just felt they did not create enough chances considering how well they played. They were at Anfield and playing against the runaway leaders, though, so no-one was expecting them to get anything. Things will be very different on Saturday.

Lawro's prediction: 2-0

The BBC pundit's comments on the Liverpool game are strange to say the least. The Hammers created plenty of chances. Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio missed glaring opportunities in the second-half alone.

It is what it is, however. David Moyes's men lost the game, and they have to move on quickly.

West Ham should fancy their chances against Southampton. They have won their last four Premier League clashes with the Saints. And the south coast outfit have only won once away in east London since 2014.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side will be far from easy to beat. But if every single one of the West Ham players perform to their best, they should have no problem swatting Southampton aside.
