AGL Power Rankings, Week 20: Al Ahli Take Top Pole After Finally Beating Rivals

1 That’s a solid looking last four results, and a very good comeback on Saturday against an in-form (domestic league) Al Jazira team. Al Ahli’s Defense isn’t yet what they were last year, but when you have an attacking groove like this it almost doesn’t matter. LAST WEEK: 2 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 6 Latest result: Won against Al Jazira 2-1 Next AGL match: Away at Al Dhafra (8/3) 2 Power Rankings can not remember the last time we enjoyed watching an Al Ain performance so much. The midfield was cohesive, the forward line was disciplined and inventive, and Asprilla produced one of the most skilful turns you’ll ever see from a Colombian. Beautiful soccer, and a deserved win. LAST WEEK: 3 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 5 Latest result: Won against Hatta 2-0 Next AGL match: Away at Al Jazira (8/3) 3 Like we said about Fabio Lima and Caio in early November last year, when they fire they fire but that defense was a scare. LAST WEEK: 4 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Won at Baniyas 4-3 Next AGL match: Home against Emirates (10/3) 4 As the game tells us time and time again, there is only so much good in this world. This weekend’s loss was a painful reminder of how frail Al Jazira can be at dealing with crosses. LAST WEEK: 1 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 4 Latest result: Lost at Al Ahli 1-2 Next AGL match: Home against Al Ain (8/3) 5 As was the case during the mid-week ACL match-up, Ismael Matar had to step up, utilise his experience and show up at the right place to get Al Wahda the winner. Safe to say that they were given a scare. LAST WEEK: 5 HIGH: 3 | LOW: 9 Latest result: Won at Ittihad Kalba 4-3 Next AGL match: Home against Baniyas (9/3) 6 The solid looking Al Dhafra we have seen in recent months is still solid enough. Put up a very strong overall performance against Emirates. The annoying bell keeps ringing though – the bell that triggers the thought – where was this earlier in the season. LAST WEEK: 7 HIGH: 5 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Won at Emirates 3-0 Next AGL match: Home against Al Ahli (8/3) 7 To give up a goal in ET after 90 minutes should hurt surely. However, more concerning is the fact in which the goal was conceded. 101 clearance which turned into a mess eventually costing them two points. LAST WEEK: 6 HIGH: 6 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Draw against Al Shabab 1-1 Next AGL match: Away at Hatta (10/3) 8 Only club at the moment that’s being driven by not-so-big-names-but-soon-to-be Emirati talents. Good to see that happen once in a while and especially so when its consistent. LAST WEEK: 8 HIGH: 2 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Won against Sharjah 1-0 Next AGL match: Away at Al Shabab (10/3) 9 Modibo Maiga – the type of player who could pull a Makhete Diop and move to a bigger club if he keeps performing like he is. The Malian attacker has bagged eight goals with none from the spot. The problem is that the defense has been non-existent for quite some time now. LAST WEEK: 9 HIGH: 7 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Lost against Al Wahda 3-4 Next AGL match: Away at Sharjah (9/3) 10 Had no answers for Al Ain’s in-game adjustments, and that has to be next up as they battle to remain in the league. LAST WEEK: 10 HIGH: 7 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost at Al Ain 0-2 Next AGL match: Home against Dibba Al Fujairah (10/3) 11 Counting down the days to when Jose Poseiro’s luck at Sharjah runs out. LAST WEEK: 11 HIGH: 6 | LOW: 12 Latest result: Lost at Al Nasr 0-1 Next AGL match: Home against Ittihad Kalba (9/3) 12 This team has had a rough few months or lets say 2017. It’s shocking to see Al Shabab run the gauntlet earlier in the season only to crumble and fall at the end. Those points racked up earlier is what currently sustains them. LAST WEEK: 14 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Draw at Dibba Al Fujairah 1-1 Next AGL match: Home against Al Nasr (10/3) 13 Had no answer to Al Dhafra. That’s all. LAST WEEK: 12 HIGH: 12 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost against Al Dhafra 0-3 Next AGL match: Away at Al Wasl (9/3) 14 Had always questioned the team’s heart this season, and anyone who watched the game against Al Wasl would suggest a U-turn in their mentality to fire up. A little too late but they did show us that. LAST WEEK: 13 HIGH: 9 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost against Al Wasl 3-4 Next AGL match: Away at Al Wahda (9/3)
